Safety is quite important as life is more precious than money. Safety has been the least considered factor while buying a car. This is why India has one of the highest fatality rates from car accidents. Of late, there has been more awareness about safety from manufacturers like Tata & Mahindra and the government. Some brands have started putting safety as a priority in their cars. But still, a lot of manufacturers continue to compromise safety by selling unsafe cars. In today’s article, let’s find out why?

Less stringent norms

India does have a crash test protocol that all cars sold in India need to pass. But this protocol is not that stringent and manufacturers easily bypass it. This crash test is quite basic compared to the test done by GNCAP. Thankfully the government is working on improving the protocols. It is establishing its crash-test agency called Bharat NCAP. Safety standards of all cars are expected to improve after the implementation of Bharat NCAP.

Unsafe cars- Importance to mileage

Indian buyers have been conditioned into the “Kitna Deti Hai” mindset. Considering the rising fuel prices, it is valid to some extent. But to get high mileage, manufacturers try to keep the weight down by using less strengthened parts. So you will see most of the lighter cars top the mileage charts. People also buy such cars ignoring safety. This also forces manufacturers to compromise on safety.

To keep costs in check

India is quite a budget-conscious market. So pricing your car competitively is quite vital for brands. On top of that, manufacturers have to pay a lot of taxes on cars. So manufacturers compromise on safety to keep costs down. But Tata and Mahindra have proved that you can indeed provide good safety with competitive pricing.

Unsafe cars- Ignoring safety

In the end, manufacturers produce what sells. People don’t give much priority to safety, so manufacturers also don’t give it much priority. Slowly people are becoming aware of safety. Still, most people ignore safety over other factors.
