Illegal car modifications you must ABSOLUTELY avoid!
There are many people who love to modify their cars in order to make them look more attractive. However not all modifications are legal. These modifications might not only put you in trouble you but others as well. In this article, we have listed illegal car modifications that you must absolutely avoid to stay out of trouble’s hand.
Installing Bullbars
Many people tend to install big crash guards and bullbars around the car. Installing a bullbar is an illegal modification as it might not only increase the weight but also block the airbag sensors. This can prove to be a fatal threat to your life. You can install rear crash guards but avoid installing any at the front.
Illegal car modifications to avoid – Using Pressure Horns
Installing pressure horns not only creates nuisance but also is not legal. Under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, the noise range for horns has been fixed between 93 dB (decibel) and 112dB. So, avoid installing loud pressure horns that have an intensity higher than the allowed decibel.
Tinted window glass with less than 50% visibility
You might have seen many cars with very dark tinted windows and windscreens. But it is illegal as well. As per rule 100 of the Central Motor Vehicles Act (CMVA) of 1988, the glass of the windscreen and rear windows of all cars in India should have minimum visibility of 70%. For windows, a minimum visibility of 50% is compulsory. If your visibility is less than that, you would be breaking the law.
Installing loud exhaust pipes or silencers
Many people love their cars loud. To achieve this, they usually change the exhaust pipes. However installing aftermarket exhaust pipes that are fancy and loud is illegal in India under rule 120 of the Central Motor Vehicles Act (CMVA). This is because the stock exhaust has catalytic converters to regulate the emission norms. Installing loud exhausts might cause noise pollution as well as air pollution.
Illegal car modifications to avoid – Tinted headlights or tail lights
The carmakers provide clear glass on headlights and tail lamps because clear glass passes the maximum light. Some people tint the glass area of headlamps and tail lamps. Doing this will reduce the throw of light from the headlights resulting in low visibility at dark. Also, tinting rear stop lamps might minimize the visibility of your car for rear vehicles. So, avoid applying tinted headlights and tail lights.
