Looking for a cheap electric car? Wait for this upcoming car

Electric vehicles are gaining a lot of momentum all over the world. In India, we are also seeing this change as the infrastructure is gradually developing. Currently, the major hindrance to buying EVs is the high initial cost. These high prices are due to the high cost of battery packs. But we can expect the technology to get more affordable in the future. Renault is already working on bringing an EV version of the Kwid. It already sells the Kwid EV in China. So we can expect it to launch in India at an affordable price. In today’s article, we will see this upcoming cheap electric car. 

Design

Concerning the design, the Kwid EV will look identical to the ICE-powered Kwid. One thing Renault might do is to give it EV badging and blue highlights to show its EV nature. Renault will have to increase the ground clearance to minimise the chance of battery scrapping at potholes and speed breakers. In the interiors, we can expect the same blue highlights. Renault might give it some new features to attract customers towards its first EV in India. 

Cheapest electric car Powertrain

Globally, the Renault Kwid comes with a 45bhp electric motor paired with a 26kWh battery. This battery will give it an impressive range of around 260km. Even if it could deliver a range of around 180km to 200km in real world, it would be great. These range figures would be sufficient for most people driving in the cities. It can go from 0 to 80% in 50 mins on a fast charger. 

Launch timeline and pricing

There is no official confirmation from Renault regarding the launch of the Kwid EV. But Renault had earlier hinted that it can bring the Kwid EV to India if there is enough demand. Coming to the pricing, the car is priced at $9,000 in China. If converted, this will be around Rs 6 to 7 lakh INR. If Renault can launch the Kwid at this price, this will be the cheapest EV in India. Renault will be looking to produce the Kwid EV locally to keep the costs further down.
