Why did PM Modi get the armoured Mercedes S-Class?

State leaders generally have the safest cars in production. These cars may look flashy, but their main job is to protect important leaders from any kind of attacks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi moved to the BMW 7 series high-security edition in 2014. Now the Prime Minister Office has replaced this 7 Series with a new Mercedes. PM Modi had also added a Range Rover Sentinel in 2019. The car was first spotted in Hyderabad house, New Delhi, where the PM recently met with Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin. This Mercedes is an S650 guard specially designed for such purposes. In today’s article, we will discuss PM Modi’s new Mercedes. 

Safety levels of the S650 guard

The Mercedes-Maybach S650 Guard provides the highest level of protection available on a production car. The S650 Guard provides VR10 level protection. It comes with a reinforced body shell and glass housing capable of withstanding bullets. It is even able to withstand explosions to a certain limit. The car can be further fitted with more safety equipment according to buyers needs. Considering it is the PM’s ride, it is expected to get all this enhanced safety and security. The new buy was based on the Special Protection Group (SPG) recommendation who recommended such purchases to the Prime Minister Office. The SPG follows a routine of six years in replacing PM’s cars.

Other details

From the outside, the Mercedes-Maybach doesn’t get many changes over the standard S650. It is a bit longer than the standard S650, but other than that it doesn’t get any noticeable changes. In the interiors, Maybach S650 gets luxurious interiors with a number of comfort features. The bigger dimensions provide it with more space than the regular S650. The S650 Guard is powered by a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine capable of producing 630bhp and 1000Nm of torque. 

Pricing

If an individual buys the Mercedes-Maybach S650 guard in India, it would cost Rs 12 crore. This price is due to the high import taxes the government levies on such luxurious goods. But considering this Mercedes is bought by a government agency for PM Modi, it is exempted from taxes. So the actual pricing will be somewhere around Rs 5 to 6 crore.
