Maruti in India has revolutionized the market with its affordable and reliable cars. Being in the market for such a long time, Maruti has launched some iconic cars in India. One such car was the Maruti Gypsy. The Gypsy was Maruti’s rugged offering. Maruti had to discontinue the Gypsy for the civilian market in 2018. Why will Maruti do it?

Maruti Gypsy

As mentioned above, the Maruti Gypsy is an iconic car in India. Maruti will look to bring back the nameplate to a bigger and modern car. Maruti had already done this with the Baleno. So Maruti can do it again to evoke the nostalgia factor in people. This new Gypsy is expected to get a lot of modern bits. It will also help Maruti to bring in another 4×4 car along with the Jimny to take on Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha.

Maruti legend – the original Gypsy

Maruti Gypsy

The Gypsy was introduced in the Indian market in December 1985. It was more popular with law enforcement due to its rugged nature. Initially, it was available only with a soft-top, but a hardtop variant was introduced later on public demand. Maruti had to discontinue the Gypsy in 2018 due to strict emission norms. Maruti still manufactures the Gypsy for the army. The last recorded price of the Gypsy was Rs 7.49 lakh. As a 4×4 at this price point, it’s only competitors were the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha.
