Hyundai has been a successful manufacturer in India. Over the years, it has established itself by providing unique products. The Santro was Hyundai’s first successful product in India. The Santro was known for its space and features. It was able to compete with the WagonR, which is the best selling Maruti car in India. Sadly Hyundai has not found the same success as the new-generation Santro. In today’s article, we will see if Hyundai discontinues this car.

Why will Hyundai do this?

The second-generation Santro was launched on the 23rd of October 2018. This launch marked the return of the Santro nameplate four years since its last generation was discontinued. Hyundai had high hopes for the Santro, considering it is an iconic nameplate.  But the Santro has failed to achieve this as it only sells around 2000 units per month. This is very low considering how important the Santro nameplate is to Hyundai.

Why is the Santro not selling well?

When the first generation Santro was launched it was quite a unique product. It only had competition from the WagonR. But now the competition has heated up a lot. It is facing competition from its own sibling Grand i10 Nios, as Hyundai has not got very competitive pricing. For perspective, by paying a bit more you get better engines, better interiors & features on the Grandi10 Nios. Also, the WagonR is still the preferred choice in this segment.

Santro’s legacy

Even if Hyundai discontinues the Santro which it most likely won’t – its legacy is very strong with the Indian market. It helped Hyundai take on Maruti and pretty much established Hyundai as a trustworthy brand in India. Hyundai sold around 1.3 million units of the first-generation Santro. Hyundai constantly updated the Santo to keep it fresh. It added segment-first features like power steering, all power windows and a 3-spoke steering wheel over various facelifts. Hyundai had to discontinue the first-generation Santro to accommodate its newer cars.

While we we think Hyundai could discontinue this car, the car will most likely kept around by Hyundai, as it is a great legacy product. The Santro might not be selling in the numbers that Hyundai thought it’s nostalgia would garner but maybe in the future, the car could get more features.
