The odd-even number-plate rule for cars in Delhi that’s all set to come into effect from the New Year is here to stay. The honourable High Court in Delhi has refused a temporary stay preventing the Delhi government from imposing the plans. The High Court bench was hearing a request from one of the petitioners that the odd-even number plate ruling be put on hold till the next hearing of the PIL’s that is scheduled for 6th January.

The honourable High Court bench went on to say that they were unaware if the odd-even formula would indeed be carried out. This observation was made in light of the lack of movement towards any such scheme from the Government in Delhi. Thus, the High Court was not in a position to grant the relief being sought by the petitioners.

The government on their part had reached out to the multiple stakeholders in the situation for coming forth with their representation, but no scheme towards a mutually agreeable solution has been finalized so far.

A physically challenged man – Shri Nipun Malhotra had petitioned the honourable court in favour of granting a relaxation in the rule to people like him. He cited the lack of preparedness towards the needs of the physically-challenged with respect to the public transportation system in Delhi at the time.

The honourable High Court bench directed the government to come forward with the precautions they are taking with regard to the transportation needs of physically-challenged people in light of the odd-even number plate rule being implemented.

As of this time, there had been no response on the part of the Delhi Government and we shall await it before updating you on the same. The odd-even number plate rule is attracting attention from all quarters of society, with many voicing the opinion that the Government might be better off looking for a more widely acceptable solution.
