Can Maruti Omni make a comeback?

Maruti has been in the Indian market for quite some time. It has revolutionized the Indian market with cars that are affordable and reliable. Being in the market for such a long time, Maruti has delivered some iconic cars. One such car is the Maruti Omni. The Omni was a popular transport vehicle that was in production for 35 years. Over the years, it didn’t have any major changes. But Maruti had to discountine it. It was not like it was not getting sales. It was able to sell 5500-6000 units even in its last month. Maruti had to discountine it due to safety and BS6 engine norms. Being such a popular car, we will look if Maruti can bring the Omni back?.

Top 10 selling cars of the last decade

New Platform

Safety was one of the biggest concerns with Omni. It had a flat front that couldn’t conform to the new crash norms. Also, no crumple zones to absorb a collision. It also lagged other mandatory safety features like airbags, ABS and rear parking sensors. Maruti can solve this problem by using Eeco’s platform on Omni. It would be cost-effective as Eeco already uses it.  Eeco already comes with all the required safety features that can be added to the Omni too.

New BS6 engine

Another issue with the Omni was its engine. The engine was a 0.8-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine. Maruti was not able to achieve BS6 emission standards with this engine. To solve this Maruti, can bring a BS6 compliant engine. The other option would be to use the engine on the Eeco with a lower tune.

Why would Maruti bring it back?

As mentioned above, even in its last few months, Omni was able to sell so many units showing its popularity. The Eeco has continued the good sales showing that people prefer this type of mini-vans. The Omni nameplate is already huge. Maruti will look to revive it to bring in more sales.
