Name and Dimensions

MG recently trademarked the name Astor for its upcoming petrol mid-size SUV. The meaning of Astor signifies prominence in business, and society thus MG will be looking to achieve the same status in the Indian car market. Hyundai Creta buyers have a certain standard and expectation and the new name suggests that MG will try to live up to it.

The dimensions of the Creta are 4300mm x 1790mm x 1620mm. If we compare this to the size of the ZS EV then the EV has dimensions  4314 mm x 1809 mm x 1620mm. Dimensions of the car clearly indicate that it will be larger than Creta but smaller than Hector.  The new MG Astor will feature similar dimensions to the MG ZS EV.

Engine and Performance

The MG ZS petrol is available globally with two powertrain options. A 1.5-litre VTi engine producing a maximum power output of 118bhp and a peak torque of 150Nm. There is also a 1.3-litre Turbo-Petrol engine option which produces a maximum power output of 161bhp and a peak torque of 230Nm.  The car in the international market comes with both 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission unit. Launch and Competition

The MG Astor will compete heavily against Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and other cars in the segment. To attract customers, MG will have to keep the pricing aggressive. There is a certain brand name of Creta in the Indian car market now and it will take much more than a good product to defeat it. The MG Astor is expected to be priced between Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 15 lakh. MG in its attempt to keep the pricing low has also promised to produce the car locally with a high level of locally sourced components.
