2022 Mahindra Thar five door – Expectations
As a customer one hates waiting periods on a car. But I can’t be more happy about the fact that Mahindra has received such great bookings and feedback on the Thar. People are cueing up to buy this affordable off-roader which now comes with varied engine, gearbox options. The car has certainly made a dent in the SUV market and Mahindra has recently decided to widen the appeal of this car further by offering it in a 5 door version in the near future. So here are our 2022 Mahindra Thar five door expectations.
Design and Dimensions
Making the Thar into a 5 door will change a lot of things. Here is what we expect. The car will no longer be a sub-four meter car obviously. It will be atleast a meter longer than it is now. While the platform will remain the same, it will be elongated. We could see the Thar in the future using the chassis setup with different suspension and bodywork of the upcoming Scorpio. That would make it easier for the manufacturer to develop and assemble the car. The Mahindra Scorpio will anyways use the new Thar’s engine and gearbox units. The 2022 Mahindra Thar five door will continue to get a split tailgate design, exposed door hinges, 18-inch alloy wheels, off-road gearbox (4h,4L).

2022 Mahindra Thar five door Comfort and features
With the 2022 Mahindra Thar 5 door, the car will be focused on making the car better for everyday use and families. Straight away we will see the car get the option of a step board, more legroom in the back for second row passengers and more comfortable seats. Maybe even captain seats. We don’t thing Mahindra will make the Thar a seven seater. The bootspace will increase substantially. The floor will continue to be the hose down type. The car will get rear AC vents, charging sockets and even a armrest. The Mahindra Thar really impressed us with its NVH levels but with this version we could see the car give us more refinement in the ride quality with the rear occupants benefiting from the better and more road oriented chassis setup of the Scorpio coming in play. We are yet to know in the Scorpio will get the same Multi-link or independent suspension. Lastly we hope the car now gets a reverse parking camera integrated with the infotainment system.
Variants and options
The 5-door Thar will appeal more to people who want space, people carrying capacity, better for family on the highway too. This means fleet operators and maybe corporate units will also increase buying this car. So we expect the Thar to come with atleast 5 variants unlike the current car. Different trims with a load of accessories for the exterior and interior. We might see some different tyre size options too, more suited to longevity and road use rather than off-road purpose.

Launch , Price and Competition
The Mahindra Thar Competition is well known – the upcoming Force Gurkha. The 2022 Mahindra Thar 5 door? The Maruti Jimny comes to mind but it won’t be the same size. Maruti will be making the Jimny in India as a 5-door for domestic use while exporting it as a three door. We will have to wait and watch as this niche in the market grows with more competition. As for pricing, the Thar will become expensive. The question will remain should Mahindra make it more expensive than the Scorpio or sell it cheaper and call it…let’s think about it…something like…Armada. How does that sound? Doesn’t that sound good?
