Tesla to Launch a Pocket-Friendly Car Soon

US electric vehicle giant Tesla is yet to enter the Indian market but its electric vehicles have already touched down in the neighboring country of Nepal. Around seven Tesla electric vehicles – four Model X Long Ranges and three Model 3 Standard Ranges, have reached the Himalayan country in 2020. Five of these have already been sold here, as per an official of ARETE International, the organization looking after marketing of the electric vehicles here.

Tesla is expected to launch 5 cars in the year 2021-2022. Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X are launching soon in India at an estimated price of Rs. 60.00 Lakh, Rs. 1.50 Crore and Rs. 2.00 Crore, respectively.

Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 sold in Nepal costs Rs.1.25 crore Nepali rupee which translates into roughly Rs.78 lakhs in India. The Model 3 sedan (US-spec) is offered in three electric powertrain options: Standard Plus, Long Range and Performance. The Standard Plus utilizes a rear-wheel drivetrain, while the Long Range and Performance variants are powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. Tesla claims an efficiency of 423km, 568km and 507km for the three variants of the Model 3, respectively. The top-spec Performance variant does a 0-97 km/hr sprint in 3.1 seconds with a top speed of 261 km/hr. The Indian model is likely to be offered in Standard Plus variant, while the other two could be introduced later.

Tesla Model S

There are three variants on offer – 75D, 100D and P100D. All three get a single-speed gearbox and all-wheel drive as standard. The real difference lies in the battery pack and the performance motor which is only available in the top-spec P100D. The 75D boasts a 75 kWh battery pack that gives it a range of up to 489km, a top speed of 225kmph. 0-100kmph can be completed in 4.2 seconds. Being a developing country, India will likely receive only this variant. Expected price of the Tesla Model S is around Rs.1.50 crore in India.

Terms and Conditions

Tesla is the most successful electric car company in the US simply because of its supercharger network. That however is absent in India. In the US, Tesla charging network is quite close to the gas station network compared to the competition. Readers should realize that Tesla does not make the best electric vehicles. The perfect charging network of Tesla’s in the USA makes it a success. To enjoy the same level of comfort here, the charging network has to get strong in India. Tesla as a car manufacturing company has already faced backlash over fit and finish and quality issues on the majority of its cars. More about Tesla India lineup 2021 below.

Tesla Model X

The Tesla Model X sold in Nepal costs Rs.3.5 crore Nepali rupee which translated into roughly Rs.2.18 crore INR. Like the S, the X is also available in three variants – 75D, 100D and P100D. The basic idea remains the same, with the 75D featuring a smaller battery pack (75 kWh) and the 100D and P100D sharing the same 100 kWh battery pack. The P100D also features the performance motor that makes it one of the quickest and fastest crossovers in the world. The 75D can run for 417km on a full charge, reach a top speed of 209kmph and hit 100kmph from a standstill in 4.9 seconds.
