Mahindra Thar Waiting Period Increased

Mahindra Thar has created big waves since its launch last month. But now the Mahindra Thar Waiting Period has reached 5 to 7 months. Is this a reason for concern for Mahindra? How is Mahindra tackling this high demand for the new Mahindra Thar.

In the first four days of the launch of the new Thar, 9000 bookings were acquired for this lifestyle vehicle. According to a recent update from Mahindra, Thar bookings have crossed the 20,000 bookings mark. But this has resulted in a longer waiting period. The company states that now the waiting period for the Mahindra Thar is between 5 to 7 months.

This longer waiting period has caused customers booking their vehicles in the first half of October to get a delivery date 3 months later in January 2021. Now these dates have been shifted to May 2021. This has lead to some of the customers to waver away from the Thar for now.

Mahindra’s Statement

Veejay Nakra, Chief Executive Officer, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said, “We are overwhelmed with this unprecedented response that the All-New Thar has garnered. I must admit the response has surpassed all our expectations and production capacities. Hence the wait for the All-New Thar will be longer than expected. We sincerely appreciate our customers’ patience and unwavering confidence in us. We had planned for a capacity of about 2,000 vehicles per month and are now getting ready to ramp it up to 3,000 by January (2021). This would help us bring down the waiting period to a reasonable timeline.”

Rivals

As of now, the Mahindra Thar is the latest offroader/ lifestyle vehicle in the market. But in the next 7 months, 2 major vehicles like the Jimny and Force Gurkha have chances to arrive. This has lead to the unhappy customers of the Mahindra Thar to cancel their bookings and wait.

Mahindra is trying to solve this problem by increasing the production of the Thar. We suspect that the problem of Mahindra Thar Waiting Period lies in the fact that the Thar is too customisable. A production vehicle with such a high amount of customisation takes time to come out of the factory and this might be the key to solving the problem. Mahindra could adopt the same method that Skoda did by shutting down their base variant bookings on the Rapid due to high demand.

Mahindra Thar Specifications

The Mahindra Thar comes with 2 engine options, 3 trims and 2 gearboxes. The car gets a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine or a 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol engine. This engine is paired with 6- speed manual gearbox with 4×4 case or a 6 speed automatic.
