EVs have become quite popular in India and are widely promoted by the government. Still one of the largest EV producing company, Tesla has not been able to enter the Indian market for a very long time. But recent news suggests that Tesla may enter the Indian market by next year. Tesla is an American Electric Vehicle and clean energy company based in California. Elon Musk is the current CEO of Tesla.  The company already sells its Model 3 which is the newest entry and costs $37,990. While India does have the Tata Nexon EV and many more, Tesla promises to enter the Indian market and adopt localization, thus generating employment and benefits to India.

An unofficial club of Tesla India asked the question to Elon about the entry of company in India. The CEO replied that the company will be entering the Indian market next year for sure.  To succeed in the Indian market, Tesla will have to re-think their strategies and develop new products if they want to sell to the masses. As of now, only Mukesh Ambani in India has a Tesla in possession.

Interest of Karnataka

Bengaluru in India is already the IT destination in India. The Karnataka government in a bid to increase development and employment is looking towards foreign investors and Tesla will be the perfect company to set up its headquarters in Bengaluru. While Tesla tried entering the Indian market in 2017 but failed due to some reasons.  The Karnataka government is focusing to set up a gigafactory with Tesla, a manufacturing unit for batteries and solar panels in India.

Delhi Electric Policy

According to a report, the American EV makers are in talks with central government to set up a Research and Development centre in India and are seeking some temporary relaxations on import duties, till they begin production in India itself.

The Indian government is promoting to adopt Electric vehicles in the country. Various state and central level grants are being provided for EV buyers. The Indian government is also promising better charging station network in India in the coming future.  The upcoming corporate average fuel efficiency CAFÉ norms will be applied in 2022. It will lead to the spread of EVs in India.
