Maruti Jimny 3-door Not for India

Maruti Jimny 3-door was the car that was showcased at the Geneva Motorshow and the Auto Expo 2020.

But for India, the Jimny 3 door is not something that Maruti will be offering. Instead a 5 door version of the car will make more sense in our market. Know more about the upcoming Maruti Jimny.

Launch Date

Recently when asked about the topic, CV Raman, Senior Executive Director was quoted as saying, “How much will you pay for the 3-door Jimny? For us, the Maruti Jimny 3-door version doesn’t work in the market, and there’s no point in getting it in as a CBU.

We believe in localization. We also don’t believe in CKD, as that also drives up the cost. But localization requires volumes, and so we come back to the same question, how much will you pay for a 1.5-litre 3-door Jimny? You see, this has to be analyzed from a business point of view. Emotions are fine, but this has to be a business decision.”

Guess everyone is behind money after all. The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy was a huge success and similar predictions could have been made about the Jimny too. However, the roads of Jimny have not been fully closed as the 5 door version is rumoured to be launched in the Indian Market in 2021.

Specifications

The Jimny if launched directly rivals the Mahindra Thar which could also be launched soon. The ongoing powertrain used in Ciaz, Ertiga, Brezza, and XL6 could be used to power this off-road monster. It produces a maximum of 138 Nm of peak torque and power output of 107.4 PS. It is rumoured to pair with a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed AMT. A 4 wheel drive option is also mentioned to be included.

Quick Review

The Jimny looks boxy and rugged. No doubt about that. It is a car made for off roads. That doesn’t mean you can’t drive it in a city. If you do drive it in the city, expect to see a lot of heads turning. 15-inch thick wheels are a trademark of this car.

  Boot space is low at 85 litres for the Maruti Jimny 3 door version but you can always collapse the2nd row seats for additional luggage room. The steering wheels and some other pieces have been borrowed from the Swift.

You also get a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. The instrument cluster is reminiscent of the first generation Gypsy and adds a historic touch to the car. There is negligible legroom for the second row and you will be better off without the seats. Consider the car to be a good 2 seater offroader. The car is all-wheel drive and will never disappoint you for the primary thing it was made- pure fun and offroading.

Model for India

The current ongoing pandemic has postponed the majority of Car Launches in India but a Maruti Jimny 5 door Car codenamed YWD was set to launch this November by Maruti Suzuki and is now expected to launch next year.
