Tata Altroz Turbo Expectations

With the onset of the BS6 emission norms, we have seen petrol engines gain more popularity in our market. But with a petrol engine, you do not get the massive torque you get with a diesel. Most manufacturers are introducing turbo petrol variants in their cars to make up for this. Tata is no different and it is developing its own 1.

2-litre turbo engine. This will first be seen in the Tata Altroz hatchback. The car might also get a DCT gearbox along with this.

The Tata Altroz is a really important product for Tata that comes in the premium hatchback segment. It gets all the latest bells and whistles that are expected from a premium hatchback along with a distinctive design that is sure to attract people. The car is also the first one to be built on the all-new ALFA platform of the company. It also created hype by being the second car ever that is made in India to get a five-star safety rating. The only negative was that it did not get a turbo engine or an automatic variant and it did not appeal to performance enthusiasts.

The current car comes with a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated Revotron engine. This engine currently produces 84 bhp and 113 nm of torque. The Tata Altroz turbo will produce 100 bhp and 141 nm of torque. This will make it a significantly faster car than before.

Also, the turbo engine will change the driving dynamics of the car. With cars in this segment getting turbo engines such as the Volkswagen Polo and the upcoming Hyundai i20, this will be a much-needed addition in the car.

The launch date will be somewhere around the festive season of the year. This will be a good strategy as by then, the market will be in much better shape. The car will be priced significantly higher than the normal variants as well. The Altroz is currently priced from 5.30 lakhs- 9.35 lakhs(ex-showroom). The updated engine could cost around Rs 1 lakh more in a similar variant. The new turbo engine could also get the introduction of the DCT gearbox. This gearbox will help get the most out of the turbo engine. Although it is unknown if the DCT gearbox will be launched along with the petrol engine.
