During our 2015 Volvo V40 luxury hatch review, we’d fallen in love with those smoking hot lines, the quality fit & finish along with the potent engine under the hood. We have now learned that the V40’s manufacturer, Volvo is currently working on the car’s successor. Peter Mertens, Volvo’s Chief of Research & Development, has confirmed that the next-generation V40 hatchback will be underpinned by the new CMA platform.

Planned along the lines of the MBQ platform by Volkswagen, the CMA underpinnings will form the basis for new Volvo models in the future. The XC40, a crossover based on the next generation V40 hatchback is expected to benefit from this unified platform approach. Geely, Volvo’s Chinese parent is also expected to use the CMA platform for cars that would sport its own badge. Just how the parent and its Scandinavian brand would share the benefits without stepping onto each others toes is something that will be interesting to see.

The 2015 Volvo V40 is a competent luxury hatch that comes across as a breath of fresh air amidst the German domination in the segment. The glorious lines from the Scandinavian school of design, the keen focus on safety and the high quality, both on the outside as well as within the cabin, are indeed a treat to owners. Priced at INR 32 Lakhs (on-road) in its current guise, the 2015 Volvo V40 hatchback is a compelling option if one is in the market. Moreover, that R-Design package, with its drop-dead gorgeous wheels and that luscious paint-job, when paired with the 150 bhp, 320 Nm torque spouting 5 cylinder, 2.0 litre turbo-diesel is one potent machine to be spotted around in.
