Yes, you read it right, Tata Harrier is coming with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. It is expected to come at a very aggressive price tag. The upcoming model is expected to produce excess 150 bhp max power. If that’s true, it will be phenomenal value for money mid-sized SUV. Let’s see what features and specification we can expect from the upcoming Tata Harrier 1.5-litre petrol.

2020 Tata Harrier

Tata recently launched the much-awaited and needed 2020 version of the Harrier. It has been undergone many changes compared with the predecessor. Starting from the power, it’s now up by 30 bhp and produces nearly 170 bhp max power. The new model also features automatic gearbox and also segment trending panoramic sunroof. It has been now offered with some new colour options to give it a fresh appeal. So we could expect that similar features will be also available in the upcoming 1.5-litre petrol version.

Tata Harrier 1.5 Powertrain

The major change in the upcoming petrol version will be the engine department. It will be equipped with a new 1.5-litre BS6 petrol engine. This engine is basically a four-cylinder version of the Nexon’s three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol. So we expect the power output somewhere between 150-160 bhp and torque output around 240-250 Nm of peak torque. It is expected with a 6-speed manual and optional 6-speed automatic gearbox.

The same petrol engine option is also expected in the upcoming Tata Gravitas. Tata Gravitas was previously showcased at Auto Expo. It is basically a 7-seater version of the Harrier. The SUV has extended wheelbase and the rear portion so that it makes space for the third-row seats. Tata is also working on the hybrid powertrains, so we could expect some hybrid lineups from Tata in the near future.

Rivals

Tata Harrier 1.5-litre petrol will be competing against other petrol SUVs in the segment. The major rivals in the segment are MG Hector 1.5-litre petrol at 143 bhp / 250 Nm, Jeep Compass 1.4-litre petrol at 163 bhp, Creta and Seltos 1.5-litre petrol at 113 bhp / 144 Nm. Mahindra is also ready to facelift their flagship monocoque SUV, XUV 500, that will be producing around 190 bhp and 380 Nm torque from the 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Pricing

Looking at the competition, Tata Harrier petrol is expected to come at a very attractive price point. The latest entity in the segment 2020 Hyundai Creta starts at Rs 10 lakhs (ex-showroom). So we are expecting the base model to be available at Rs 13-14 lakhs (ex-showroom). The launch of the petrol version is hoped somewhere around the start of 2021.  If looked at the sales figures of the mid-sized SUVs, approx 40-50 per cent sales are from the petrol version. The average sales of the Harrier per month are around 1,200-1,300. So releasing the petrol model will definitely boost the sales by a significant amount.
