Yeah, you read it right we have confirmed the launch for the 2020 Mahindra Thar. India’s favourite off-roader is going to hit showrooms by the mid of April 2020. The booking is expected to start soon, might be two weeks later from today. It’s is very joyous news or all the Thar fanboys and of course, we too love this offroad monster. So, now we knew about the launch date lets see what all changes it will possess in the new generation.
The exterior of the 2020 Mahindra has gone multiple changes. It was spotted multiple times while testing. So we now have many details about the exterior. Starting from the front, the SUV gets much wider bonnet and front grille. The grille will have signature 7-slot verticle design. It will continue to have character circular headlamps. From the side, it looks much bigger compared with the predecessor. The new-gen Thar will have hardtop as well as soft-top option. The design might remind you about the current Jeep Wrangler somehow.
The interior of the 2020 Mahindra Thar is now much cleaner and modern compared with the predecessor. The AC console is similar to the Mahindra TUV 300. It will clearly have more storage option than before. The touch screen infotainment system is expected to be around 9-inch. The steering wheel and instrument cluster(Analog with MID) is borrowed from the Mahindra XUV 300, which is quite nice. The upholstery too is upgraded that will match today’s standards.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar will be powered by Mahindra’s tried and tested 2.2-litre diesel and optional new 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine. Both the engines will be BS6 compliant units. The former will be producing around 140 bhp max power while the latter is expected with 190 bhp and 380 Nm peak torque.
It will have 6-speed manual transmission with 4X4 gear ratios, However, the automatic transmission is still in suspicion. The SUV will have a differential locking system that helps to get out when stuck in very slushy mud. The same engine options will be seen on the upcoming new-gen Scorpio and new-gen XUV 500.
Price and Rivals
The pricing of the 2020 Mahindra Thar is expected to have a hike of Rs 40-50,000 over the predecessor. For reference, the current model costs around Rs 9.64 lakhs(ex-showroom). It will be competing against the Force Gurkha and upcoming Maruti Jimny.
