The imagination sure seems to be running wild when it comes to BMW’s future plans, with fresh rumours surfacing that they may be working with Lexus on a supercar in the next few years. If media voices are to be believed, then the ongoing BMW-Toyota partnership may very well be aiming to out-gun Audi’s R8 supercar.

According to reports, a mid-engined, all-wheel-drive prototype already exists and there will be both, BMW as well as Lexus badged variants once production commences. Aluminium space-frame construction, carbon-fibre tubs, dual-propulsion systems (conventional internal combustion unit powering the rear wheels, with electric motors at the front) are all doing the rounds.

There are talks of BMW badged variants sporting TwinTurbo, plug-in hybrid power under the hood (in straight-six guise), with due attention being lavished by their M-Division. Lexus on the other hand is rumoured to have looked towards LeMans for inspiration, going with Toyota’s 3.

7 litre V8 from their race-car, albeit having suitably tuned for on-street performance.

Even as we’re drooling over the prospects if these rumours were prove to be true, we’re reminded of BMW M Boss – Frank van Meel’s words, who’s made it clear that there’ll be no other range-topper in the line-up as long as i8 production continues.
