Diesel price has been raised by 50 paise per litre but left petrol untouched. This is the first increase in diesel prices since the month of May andcomes into effect from today.

After the increase, diesel now costs INR 44.95 per litre in Delhi, up from Rs 44.45. The price increase will vary between states due to the tax rates and levies. In Mumbai, diesel would cost INR 52.08, due to higher VAT applicable. In Kolkata, the new selling price would be INR 48.71 and in Chennai it would be INR 46.08.

Diesel prices were raised on 16th May 2015 to INR 52.28 a litre from INR 49.57. The price since then has been periodically reduced. The retailers had skipped the fortnightly revision of fuel prices scheduled for September 15 on the ground that the difference between production cost and retail rate was marginal. Petrol price remain untouched and were last revised on 1st September, when it was reduced to INR 61.20 per litre in Delhi from INR 63.20.
“The current level of international prices and INR-USD exchange rate warrant a price increase, which is being passed on to consumers with this price revision,” said IndianOil, in a statement announcing the revision, as per ET.
“The movement of prices in the international oil market and INR-USD exchange rate shall continue to be monitored closely and developing trends of the market will be reflected in future price changes.”
