Honda to launch India’s BS6 Scooter today

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India had sent out invites for the launch of the new product. It will unveil its first BS6 two-wheeler today. The company teased us with a video of a pin falling with text that reads “please hold a pin drop silence.” There were speculations of the launch of an electric scooter but as the company said that it is a BS6, this makes it clear that it will be a two-wheeler involving a combustion engine. This will be cleared out today at the unveiling. Scooters contribute a significant share of Honda’s sales.

Thus, the model to be launched could be an entirely new scooter.

The BS-VI compliant product will be equipped with a fuel injection system, an electronic control unit, an O2 sensor, a three-way catalytic converter and an onboard diagnostic module.

We will see Honda adding more features to the two-wheeler which will then trickle down to other products in the Honda range. The addition of Bluetooth connectivity to the instrument console to access various features such as turn-by-turn navigation, caller ID and ride statistic might be one of the features that we expect to see on select BS-VI compliant Honda products. TVS already offers a similar function via its SmartXonnect Connected Technology on the Ntorq 125 and Hero offers similar functions on the newly launched XPulse 200T and XPulse 200. Honda not wanting to be left out might just offer these plus a host of other segment-first features.

With the additional hardware, the BS-VI compliant product will most definitely retail at a premium as compared to the existing BS-IV two-wheelers in the Indian market. Also, this product will use a new platform that Honda will make sure other products in the future are based on.

The Honda scooter range caters to all buyers in different segments and includes budget scooters, expensive scooters and sporty youth-oriented scooters. There will thus, be many products coming off this platform and will use this scooter’s features as a base.
