Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Limited have been on a sales high ever since they introduced their segment-defining Activa, back in 2001. A story that continues to this day, even when sales of two-wheelers have been hit severely by the lack of rains around the country.

New Activa-i

Honda isn’t worried at all though – for they have just hit a new sales high with the Activa in this fiscal by shipping out a million units in the first five months alone! Topping the two-wheeler sales charts for three consecutive months means that Honda have begun their festive season run from an extremely strong position. Things hit a high gear with Onam celebrations down South, in Kerala contributing the lions share to this achievement. Thus, while other two-wheeler manufacturers were introducing promotional scheme after another, Honda have been laughing their way to the bank on the sheer 20% rise in demand (year-on-year) for the Activa alone. The scooters segment commands over 30% of the two-wheeler market in India and continues to contribute almost 60% of Honda’s sales volumes, with the Activa alone chipping in at the over-50% mark!

These achievements are staggering for the fact that they come at a time when the entire two-wheeler industry (scooter segment included) has been struggling on the overall sales front. To give it greater perspective, market leader – Hero MotoCorp has taken a double-digit hit in sales for the same period.

There have been a slew of launches from the competition in the past couple of years, with many more in the works. But the segment leader continues to do what it does best – outsell everyone else by a margin high enough to give them nightmares.
