Fiat’s upcoming pick-up truck – Toro has been spied testing in Italy. The vehicle has been earlier spotted testing in Brazil and is based on the new small wide platform by Fiat Chrysler.

The Fiat Toro was spotted by Carscoops at the Stelvio Pass in Northern Italy, which is one of the best roads in Europe. The Toro’s testing in Italy also confirms that the vehicle is being readied for a global launch. It will be sold in global markets where pick-up trucks are popular, and will compete against the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and the Mitsubishi L200/Triton. Fiat is looking at launching the Toro by the end of this year.

An AWD system could also be offered as optional equipment. The interior theme is borrowed from Fiat’s latest range of products, like the steering wheel, dashboard and instrument cluster. The multi-function steering wheel, air-con controls, and audio are same as the Jeep Renegade.

The Toro will be the base for an SUV too. While a Fiat branded SUV will come to India is yet to be seen. However, Fiat Chrysler have announced a compact SUV under Jeep brand, codenamed 551,  which is expected to come to India by 2017. The Jeep 551 shares much of its mechanical structure including suspension systems that are offered on the Toro. Engine options known as of now, include a 2.0 litre petrol motor with 156bhp and a similar capacity Multijet II diesel motor, yielding 170bhp. The SUV will also come in a 4X4 version.
