Volvo Auto India has launched the V40 hatchback at an introductory price of INR 27.5 Lakhs (on-road, Delhi) in the country. The hatchback has been launched in two trims – Kinetic and R-Design. The Swedish automajor has presented the V40 hatchback in diesel guise only, at the moment. At the launch event, the company also announced that only 300 units of its new XC90 SUV would be sold in India this year.

Visually, the Volvo V40 hatchback is quite identical to its cross country version. However, it loses out the full body cladding and extended ground clearance that the Cross Country variant has. The front bumper is redesigned as well. The Volvo V40 gets park assist, pedestrian airbag & city safety feature that allows car to auto-brake and avoid a crash under speed of 50km/h. It also gets 8-airbags as standard safety feature and a 5-star NCAP rating. Some other standard features are automatic climate control, powered front seats with memory, reverse camera, parking sensors, etc. to name a few.

As far as the Volvo V40 R-Design variant is concerned, it gets some cosmetic changes over the entry-level Kinetic variant. It flaunts a new blacked-out grille and air dams at the front. In addition, new alloy wheels, panoramic glass roof and a new paint shade is also offered as standard feature with the Volvo V40 R-Design. It is being priced at INR 30.5 Lakhs (On-road, Delhi). Under the hood, the V40 hatchback gets a 2.0-litre turbocharged D3 diesel engine which churns out a maximum power of 147.5bhp and peak torque of 350Nm. It is the same engine that also does duties to the V40 Cross Country. Volvo V40 hatch would challenge the likes of Mercedes-Benz A-Class and BMW 1-Series.
