Royal Enfield has already made it clear that the company will want to have a footprint in several developed markets as well. For this reason, the company will be developing an engine that will be majorly used on export products and the company will look at getting it into India sometime in the future. This is a 1250cc twin-cylinder engine and this is the third engine that RE is considering for export purposes. At the moment, this engine development is in a very nascent stage.

“This engine will have be a twin-cylinder and Royal Enfield is considering about building this one just for exports,” said one of sources close to the factory. He further stated, “The other two engines, 410cc and 650cc will be made for Indian use and exports too, but the company wants to have a bigger flagship product over the Continental GT. For this reason, the company is considering this engine and a new bike too.”

Royal Enfield’s Tamil Nadu plant Phase II will be completed in this year, while the new R&D centre in Chennai will also commence work soon. The satellite R&D centre in UK should be ready by the end of FY16. “We are looking at two new engine platforms between 250cc-750cc,” stated Siddartha Lal, MD and CEO, Eicher Motors in a conference call recently. After this there were rumours that the twin-cylinder engine is 750cc, which is actually 650cc. The two engine platforms will churn out 410cc and 650cc (twin-cylinder). The 410cc will come in two states of tune, first being carbureted and five-speed transmission and the second being fuel-injection with six-speed.
