Private cars will not to bear the burden of toll tax from 1st June in Maharashtra. The BJP-led Devendra Fadvandis’ government announced on 29th May that there shall be no toll for private cars. BJP had won this election as they had claimed to make the state toll-free. 12 of the toll booths will be scrapped forever, however the toll at the access point of Mumbai and sea-link will remain. This means there will still be traffic jams at these points.

The sea-link has only access for cars and anyways there are no commercial vehicles or even two-wheelers that are plying on this route.

We do not have the details of the toll booths that have got this benefit, but the ones around Mumbai will still be retained. The government will be coming to a decision for toll booths around Mumbai by the end of July, which is still two months away and without any kind of confirmation.

So, all those who commute to Mumbai from Thane or Navi Mumbai will still pay INR 70 in a day including the return toll.

The recently started Kamothe toll near Panvel, Kaisheli on Bhiwandi highway and Thane Ghodbunder tolls have been exempted for private vehicles. This makes it a lot easier for drive and the time to commute also comes down. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway toll will be retained.

“Although we are waiving light vehicles from toll, the state government will not put any additional burden on heavy vehicles,” said PWD minister for the state, Chandrakant Patil.
