Royal Enfield R&D is making two engine platforms

Royal Enfield isn’t just working on platform, but the company is also developing two new engine platforms also that will have engines displacing from 250cc to 750cc. The new Royal Enfield engines will be powering their new upcoming products.

“We are developing two new engine platforms on which multiple products could be launched. The new products would be in the range of 250 cc and 750 cc and we expect to see products introductions starting next year,” Eicher Motors Ltd Managing Director and CEO Siddhartha Lal said in a conference call with a PTI journalist.

Speaking of the upcoming range of products, Mr Lal stated that Royal Enfield will retain its principles and not make bikes that are extreme and very sporty. He mentioned, “”We would stick to our core proposition. The bikes would be for international markets and they would be higher performance bikes but not extreme performance bikes.”

With these two new engine platforms, Royal Enfield is looking at tapping international markets and churning out multiple bike models over the next decade. Royal Enfield is investing INR 500 crores to expand its production and is also setting up an R&D centre in Chennai, India and a satellite centre in the UK. The satellite centre will be ready by this year-end and the Chennai base shall commence work in April 2016. The increase in plant capacity will be to 50,000 monthly units by this year-end, which is at the moment 30,000 units. In the first quarter of 2015, Royal Enfield has seen the best possible growth of 44% with a record sales of 92,845 units.
