Fords! Who does not like them? A mass market car brand that tries to make everything they make, sportier and interesting. A Ford always has a cooler version of any car it sells. One with more features or one that packs a heavier punch. A ‘Fast Ford’. It’s the most successful brand to come out of America. It is a pioneer of innovation. It’s a blue-collar icon. Last year the company announced that it will not be selling sedans and small cars in North America anymore, the company will only sell the Ford Mustang, its pickup trucks and SUVs. And during its annual 2018 shareholders meeting, company executives defended their decision, saying that the automaker is “reinventing the American car,” not killing it. The Fiesta platform will be reserved for the rest of the world where there is a demand for cars of that size.

Sounds fair? Maybe.

Given the changes of today, we took a look back at the Fords of yesterday and came up with a list of ten cars that met the following simple criteria: they were brilliant. Some of it’s sad as many cars did not come to India. But nonetheless we love them and these were the cars that filled our minds with awe and made our hearts skip a beat. These cars had to be innovative, game changers, beautiful and some were downright badass!

Check out the list below

Ford Model T

Our top pick for the number-one Ford of all time is not only an important car for the brand but the world. Over 20 years, Ford built about 16.5 million of these bare-bones, four-cylinder machines at assembly plants around the world. Yes, assembly plants, an invention by Ford. With the Model T, Ford really did put the world on wheels and changed manufacturing processes forever.

Ford V8

The Model T was aimed at putting people on the road and the Ford V8 was made to big the middle-class blue-collar hero a powerful and luxurious car. The V8 made 65bhp but it was a V8 and it set of the culture of hot-rodding and made the V8 flathead Deuce the eternal hot rod.

Ford Bronco

OJ Simpson drove one but we can gloss over that! (He had style, at least). But the Bronco was the ultimate when it came to excess and big no messing around square SUVs. It was a convertible too. Big tyres, 4×4, convertible, two-door – Ford make the new one fast, please!

Ford F-150

Had to mention this because it’s the bestselling vehicle in the USA. In 2018 Ford sold an F-150 every 35 seconds. Let’s just say, how much time you spent reading this story, divide it by 35 and let us know how many Fords were sold by then in the comments below.

Ford GT

How do you commemorate beating Ferrari at Le Mans over and over again? You make a replica of the LeMans winning car and sell it to the public.

A proper bedroom wall poster car.

Ford gt40

Ford Thunderbird

The original two-seat Thunderbird was the first truly glamorous Ford. India too was littered with them in the 60s and 70s. It was the choice of the rich and famous. This and the Chevy Impala have starred in so many Bollywood movies.

Ford Shelby 427 Cobra

Ford conspired with Carroll Shelby to build a whole new chassis under the AC Ace body and shove in the outrageous 427-cubic-inch (7.0-liter) “side-oiler” V-8. With between 425 and 485 horsepower, it has set a high bar for the performance cars that followed.

Ford Capri

Applying the hit Mustang formula in Europe, Ford’s Capri was a sexier body fitted to the mechanical bits of the Ford Cortina. And it was quickly embraced. It’s still a very desirable body and many enthusiasts still long for it.

Ford Focus RS

A modern personal favorite! When launched in 2017, this car was the number one reason for many to watch Ken Block’s Gym Khanna videos. The AWD hot hatchback built for hooliganism. The 1.5-ton hatchback packs 340bhp/340Nm of power.

That’s too much firepower for a hatchback. Combine this with AWD, a drift mode and you have one of the best every day/track/backroad/rally car ever.

Ford Mustang

How can I end this story without the Mustang! If Ford had never built a Mustang, there would be no Camaro. No Challenger/Charger. No muscle car wars. It’s been a subject of news, movies, controversy and has defined imaginations across generations and has always spurred a wave of car enthusiasts.

So, what was so exciting about the Mustang? Just look at it – that long hood, two-door cockpit, an interior full of airplane like knobs and toggles. A car that can raise your heart beat just looking at it. And the power is there too! Let’s talk about India. You get a properly fast and tyre killing 5.0-litre V8 with the Mustang GT. It’s better than good. It’s amazing.
