What to expect from the 2020 Mahindra Bolero? The Bolero recently achieved BS6 readiness certification with the addition of a driver-side airbag, speed alert system, driver and co-driver seabelt warning, manual override of the central locking to open the door from inside and rear parking sensors. But what has to be updated is the engine. Right now the Bolero Power+ is powered by a 1.5-litre mHawk D70 diesel engine that makes 70bhp of power and 195Nm of peak torque mated to a five-speed manual transmission. This is the same engine that also powers the Mahindra TUV300. Mahindra has also earlier confirmed that the bigger 2.5-litre engine will also meet the BS6 norms. This engine powers the standard Bolero, Bolero Plus and the Bolero Ambulance. In fact, all the diesel engines in Mahindra’s portfolio except the 1.2-litre unit on the KUV100 will be updated to follow BS6.

Will there be anything new?

Not really. If Mahindra is planning to give this rugged bare-bones SUV a facelift, it will be later in the year. And yes, it will be a facelift and not a whole new generation car. The new safety net increased by Mahindra makes the car meet BS6 norms. Once the engine comes, the Bolero will be fully updated. Mahindra will not want to invest in the 2020 Mahindra Bolero by giving it heavy cosmetic and feature updates right now. The car has been used as a workhorse and will get more convenience features added to its list of options in the future. The Mahindra Bolero might get a better infotainment system in the future, a reverse parking camera and a new top variant with alloy wheels.

There is a possibility that Mahindra might create a top variant with plush features like the above-mentioned infotainment screen, camera, power windows on all doors and get a AMT gearbox. This is a very slim possibility of the car getting a gearbox like that but if it gets one – it will be optioned with the 1.5-litre engine on the Power Plus and get a Eco driving mode too. We can expect a price hike of Rs 40,000 on the Bolero Power Plus when it gets the updated engine. Right now check out our video below of the latest Mahindra Bolero Plus ABS variant.
