The S90 is the new-gen sedan that is based on this platform that it shares with the XC90. This is a mid-size premium sedan has been launched at about INR 59 lakhs (on-road, New Delhi). What does the S90 have on offer? Is it worth considering? We share all the details on this new sedan.

Volvo S90

Volvo S90 Design

Do you recall Volvo’s new Coupe concept showcased at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show? The new S90’s styling has been derived from that. Most of the design elements shown on the Coupe Concept have been retained on the new S90. The vertical slats on the front grille seem to be hanging. There are curved to give it a 3D look. The headlamps have the Thor hammer design formed by the LEDs. The fascia is like the new-gen Volvos. From the side, the long bonnet is visible. The silhouette has been designed for the best possible head room even for the rear passengers. The rear continues with the same theme, and the tail lamps are a tad thicker than what I would have personally liked.

Volvo S90 side profile

The S90 gets headlamps inspired from Thor, that we have already seen in the XC90. It gets the signature Volvo front grill, with the prominent logo that unmistakably is recognizable. the suave bumper has air ducts on either sides and and housed the fog lamps at the bottom. The long bonnet makes the S90 look sporty. The silhouette is sleek and the roofline slopes neatly towards the rear. The lines make it look premium. The taillamps are C-shaped LED ones

Volvo S90 Interiors

Volvo is different, it stands out with not just the exterior styling, but even the interior layout. The design is modern and something that the others might follow soon. It has a large touchscreen system at the centre that controls a lot of elements like music, temperature, seat ventilation etc. This is the only vehicle in its segment that comes with white-colour steering wheel while the other German competition has the darker shades.

The instrument cluster too is made up of an LED screen. The other German sedans have a lot of similarity, while the Volvo designers have gone out and designed something that is simple, yet elegant. The S90 comes with 19 speaker music system and this is offered as a standard.

The seats on the Volvo are extremely comfortable. These have been designed by orthopedists for the best comfort and safety for least injury. The rear seats are comfortable and they have decent recline for comfortable long journeys. There is a central armrest too that makes it easy to relax. The boot is large enough to gobble luggage for the entire weekend for four people. Where the S90 excels are the features it offers as standard, while the competition have it as optional.

Volvo S90 Engine

Volvo continues to offer the four-cylinder diesel engine on the S90. This is the same engine block that is used on the XC90, with a different state of tune. Crank the engine and you won’t hear any noise intruding into the cabin. The engine push start button is chunky and so noticeable. Drive it in comfort mode and the drive is relaxed. The acceleration is smooth, the shifts aren’t jerky and the power is linear. Shift to the Dynamic mode and you will notice a sea of change. The throttle is more responsive, gear shifts are faster and you do you feel the difference when you drive. The Eco mode is about relaxed drive and better efficiency.

The engine has a strong mid-range and it does get the oomph when you give it the beans. The transmission on the S90 is seamless and responsive. The S90 misses out on paddle shifts, but this will come on the more powerful T8 engine, once it shall be launched. That one will get more power and more embellishments too.

The Volvo S90 will be powered by a 2.0-litre engine, both in petrol and diesel. The engines will be mated to an eight-speed Aisin-Warner automatic transmission. The engines is not as powerful as its competiton. It will be refined and fuel efficient too. The petrol engine is set to come with a 315bhp, but the launch will be sometime next year.
