Hyundai has identified the lucrative segment in India as SUVs. After the success of the Venue and Creta, they want to expand their SUV range with the new Bayon. The Bayon is already on sale in European markets, and here is what we can expect from the Indian-spec version.

Looks

The Bayon has the crossover SUV profile and looks like an i20 on stilts. But it is still a striking-looking car. The sharp cuts and creases, along with the diamond-cut alloys, give it a sporty look. You get quirky boomerang-shaped taillights and a split headlamp setup that match the design language of other Hyundai models. The Bayon is arguably a better-looking car than the Venue and Sonet, and could take some market share from them.

The length of the global spec-Bayon is slightly over 4m, which suggests Hyundai may try to reduce it to gain tax leeway compared to bigger cars.

Interior

On the inside, it will share many components with the Venue. With the Bayon, we expect the list to include a 10.25″ infotainment screen, wireless charging, wireless Android Auto and Apple Car Play, panoramic sunroof, fully-digital driver’s display, ventilated front seats and an ADAS suite.

Powertrain

While the UK-spec Bayon gets a 1.0L turbo-petrol engine, Hyundai plans to launch an all-new 1.2L turbo-petrol engine. However, it is yet to be known whether it will get both these options or be sold with a 1.2L as standard. Hyundai have also revealed its ambitions to introduce hybrid powertrains in its lineup, and we likely see the Bayon with a 1.2L strong-hybrid powertrain. Moreover, it will be offered with CNG to maximise efficiency. The transmission options are suspected to be a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed AT.

Rivals

It is yet to be confirmed where the Bayon will sit in the Hyundai range. The Bayon sits between the compact SUV and premium hatchback segments, making it difficult to classify. But rumours suggest it will be below the Venue. It will compete against other sub-4m cars like the Nexon, Altroz, Sonet, 3XO, Baleno, and Fronx.

Expected Price and Launch

The pricing will be aggressive, with a range starting from 8 lakhs and the top variant costing 12 lakh rupees (on-road, Mumbai). Hyundai has promised to launch up to 26 vehicles over the next 5 years, and Bayon is one of them. Furthermore, they also have plans for an Exter and Ioniq 5 facelift, along with a relaunch of the Tucson. The launch is scheduled for the second half of 2026; however, these events could delay it further.
