The Maruti Wagon R has created such a space for itself that all car brands always want to. Being a best seller for a long time, it is a well respected brand. Not only the petrol, but also the CNG version has been a huge success and continues to grow. The Maruti Wagon R CNG is a very affordable car too. It is a very good concoction of practicality and economy. How is the Maruti Wagon R CNG? Is it worth buying? Is it a practical enough? We tell you this in detail.

Maruti Wagon R CNG Mileage

Maruti Wagon R CNG Mileage

VariantMileage
CNG26 km/kg

Fuel economy is the most important factor while considering a CNG car. For the Maruti Wagon R CNG, the company claims a mileage of 26 km/kg, and so a 10-12 kg of CNG cylinder can make the car run sufficiently for approximately 250kms. As compared to the petrol version there are very frugal figures. It costs more than half for fuel, as a litre of petrol costs about 63 rupees whereas a kg of CNG is somewhere between Rs 43 (in Mumbai circle, and even lesser in New Delhi). The ease and availability of CNG in Delhi and Mumbai, has made the Maruti Wagon R CNG a good seller, with a market share in excess of 45% in these cities.

Maruti Wagon R CNG Design

The Maruti Wagon R CNG has the same design as the petrol version. There is no difference between the two. The Maruti Wagon R CNG is available only in the Lxi variant.  Hence, it does not get all the features. Practicality is the virtue of the Maruti Wagon R CNG due to the same tall boy proportions. In metros, this hatchback is a fast seller and has become one of the most popular cars around. The styling is very simplistic. Certain elements in the Maruti Wagon R CNG do make it attractive such as the chrome strip on the front grille and the clear lens headlamps.

Maruti Wagon R CNG Interior

Stepping inside is a pleasure. One doesn’t ned to crouch or climb up to sit in. It is particularly easy for aged people and this is also a big reason for preferring the Maruti Wagon R CNG. It has ample of headroom for 6-feet plus driver and offers fantastic all round visibility. The front is clean with two-tone beige & black dashboard. We had the LXI model, being a base variant it didn’t have anything like the instrumental panel apart from AC switches but the VXI variant is equipped with an in-dash music player, radio, aux and USB ports. The AC vents of the Maruti Wagon R CNG are wide enough and cool the cabin in no time. Overall, it has pleasing interiors that don’t hurt the eye.

The rear is spacious and can seat three adults. The storage space given inside the cabin of the Maruti Wagon R CNG is also good enough. There are lot of storage compartments and this will make buyers happy especially women. For more convenience, it also gets Swift like cup holders on the left. The front doors get the small storage space to keep couple of water bottles on the go. I would personally give Wagon R a five on five in terms of space and storage inside the cabin. The only downside with this car is the boot. There is no space at all to store anything in it if you opt for the CNG variant for obvious reason- the big fat CNG tank.

Maruti Wagon R CNG Engine

Engine
Engine

The Maruti Wagon R CNG comes with a 1.0-litre petrol engine. It has an auto switch to CNG The car starts on petrol and in a few seconds the switch automatically shifts the fuel to CNG. One can switch back to petrol at any given time. This is a sequential CNG kit which is superior to regular CNG kits that one fits in the aftermarket. Driving in CNG is an easy affair. There is sufficient power and it doesn’t feel the need for more power in city. A speed of 100km/hr can be achieved without any hassle. The city driving is relaxed as there isn’t much of a need to shift gears. There is some difference in power when you drive in petrol and CNG, but you won’t realise until you are racing. The engine is smooth and silent even at 100km/hr.

We recommend you to drive on CNG as this is highly affordable and perfect for city driving.

Maruti Wagon R CNG Ride and Handling

Wagon R CNG 03The Maruti Wagon R CNG takes a back seat when it comes to handling. However, it is good enough for city driving. The Wagon R though has improved over the years in terms of handling. The steering response is good at normal speeds but is worrying at high speeds. Taking tight turns is a breeze and you don’t feel nervous unless you speed up and cross the 100km/hr mark. Anyway, the Maruti Wagon R CNG is not built for high speed cruising. The ride quality on the other hand was impressive. Bad road conditions aren’t felt  inside the Maruti Wagon R CNG, as the suspension absorbs everything like a cushion. The new generation Wagon R is much better and also trumps most of the competition in this department.

Though it is not the most comfortable or luxurious back seat but the wide dimensions with ample space behind keeps the passenger comfortable even for long route journeys. Our overall experience of driving the Maruti Wagon R CNG and sitting at the back was satisfactory according to its standards and its cost.
