TVS Apache RR 310 3

The first impression is a lasting one and that is exactly what the Apache RR 310 has delivered. It impresses instantly and what your eyes experience is a sharp looking bike that looks good from every angle. It is a balanced design with sharp styling.

This is a first Apache to get a full fairing. The front sees twin bi-LED lamps which glow together. There is a white decal in the centre.

The wing mirrors are mounted on the fairing and there is a windshield too, which does not feel flimsy. There are clip-ons on this bike and it feels solid. So do the switchgears and grips which are of good quality. The paint quality is also right up there with the best. The red has a deep gloss and the matte black looks mean. Overal fit and finish of the bike is also impressive.

The instrument pod is an interesting one and is positioned in a vertical fashion. It gives out quite a lot of information such as gear indication, range, average consumption, top speed achieved, lap times and tripmeters. It is a fully digital one. The fuel tank is well-chiselled and one can grip the tank properly as it has space to tuck in the thighs. The seat is well cushioned and is a step type one, so the pillion has to sit in a raised manner. Not ideal for pillion riding, except when necessary. The pillion seat can be opened with the key and has some storage space for the tool kit and documents.

The rear is also attractive, specially due to the taillamp design. This makes it instantly recognizable from the rear. However, we think that the tail could have been a bit slimmer. The exhaust looks good and is positioned pretty well. It gets brushed aluminium finishes.

There is no chrome on it, thankfully.

Features

This is a feature loaded bike. The instrument pod is informative. There are clip-ons on this one. It gets LED headlamps and taillamp, 41mm front inverted forks and a rear 10-step adjustable mono-shock. There are front and rear disc brakes, 300mm and 240mm, respectively. ABS comes as a standard fitment. The tyres are 17-inch ones from Michelin. The bike misses out on a slipper clutch and ride by wire, which its rival the KTM RC 390 offers.

There are some clever things this bike comes with, for instance, the hot air from the engine is channeled out through a duct in the fairing, where it gets released at the bottom. The hot air does not blow on to the rider’s legs. This is an innovative thing, as many bikes have complaining customers about this issue. While driving in the city, the heat can get very disturbing.

TVS Apache RR 310 1Performance

The Apache RR 310 gets a 312cc, single cylinder, liquid cooled engine that belts out 33bhp of power@9700rpm and has a torque of 27.3Nm@7700rpm. This engine has a reverse inclined architecture, which is a first for an Indian motorcycle. The bike is powerful and has decent punch. But the highlight is in the way it produces this power, which is well spread throughout. At not point does it feel lacking power. Quite an eager engine this one is.

The bike fires up with a soft growl and wringing the throttle produced a deep muffled sound and doesn’t get too loud. This feels sophisticated. The engine is reverse inclined and this keeps the wheelbase shorter.

The bike pulls off cleanly from rest and in no time touches triple digits. As per TVS, it has a 0-100 km/h timing of 7.17 seconds. The top speed is rated at 160 km/h, but we could manage 140 on the track, before we ran out of a straight road. The six-speed gearbox is slick, but could’ve been better. One small issue noticed was a little vibration over 6000rpm. This is felt most under the seat. However, in regular riding, one hardly operates in that powerband.

Ride and Handling

This is an area which should definitely be talked about, as maximum effort has been put here. The chassis is built very light. It is a Trellis frame with a split chassis. The result is a bike that is very nimble and a joy to ride, specially on twisties. it feels agile to chuck it into corners and also keeps its composure well. The suspension is developed in collaboration with KYB, to provide a perfect balance. The Michelin tyres offer good grip too. The braking is good because of the disc brakes at the front and rear, however, I think it could have had better bite.

The best part is that though there is a lot of focus on its on-track capabilities, the Apache RR 310 is quite easy for daily commuting as well. The riding position isn’t too aggressive, say like the KTM RC, so it is more friendly to use.

Mileage

Though we have not done an extensive road test in city riding conditions yet, we assume it should be returning around 35km/l. This is not bad considering its seamless performance.

TVS Apache RR 310

Verdict

The Apache 310 RR is a big which displays the prowess of TVS in racing. This is clearly the best bike made by them and the effort gone in to making it is evident. As an entry lvel sports bike, it ticks many boxes and creates an identity of its own. At Rs. 2.05 lakhs, it will compete with the KTM RC390, which is priced higher. A good combination of looks, easy riding, powerful machine and very good build, the Apache RR 310 is sure to sway a lot of buyers.
