BMW 3 GT 2017 Review

BMW 3 GT went through a facelift last year in October.

The German classic in its (3 Series) sixth generation, reputed for its fabulous handling and drive dynamics reappeared with a few cosmetic changes on the exteriors as well as the interiors. We drove it to check out if it really holds the ground as firm as it did before. We review the new BMW 3 GT 2017. Let’s find out.

BMW 3 GT 2017 Design

The BMW 3 series comes in following forms – sedan and Gran Tourismo. The facelift brought along with it a new petrol motor churning out a massive 252bhp of power, redesigned headlight cluster with adaptive LEDs, new LED tail lamps and new fog lamps with LEDs as a standard fitment. The front and rear bumpers also received a sportier styling and some chrome inserts.

A host of other interesting features have been carried forward from the previous range. Sporty Spoiler is one such nice embellishment, it beautifully adds up to the overall style quotient of the car. At higher speeds it rises up automatically to create a downforce, making the ride more stable, theoretically speaking. The frameless doors of the GT further uplift its imagery for a style seeking enthusiast. There isn’t a major difference in the styling when compared to the regular 3 Series. However, this one gets a longer wheelbase for more rear seat space and at the same time, a bigger boot too.

BMW 3 GT 2017 Interiors

The 3 series GT has been designed for better cabin roominess and comfort for the occupants. The overall dimensions are therefore slightly stretched when compared with the regular 3 Series sedan. The GT has a wider cabin and promises generous passenger space due to larger body dimensions. Apart from the space, the additional chrome inserts and some decorative wood panels in the latest version help enhance the premium appeal of the vehicle interiors. The bells and whistles on offer are similar to that on the 3 Series.

Asymmetrically designed central floor console for the driver with the use of a decorative trim on the passenger side is a nice design touch. A nine speaker audio system, panoramic glass roof and an 8.8” i-Drive infotainment system with an integrated 20GB built in hard drive are some of the other features in the bucket list.  As the long wheelbase is offered on the 3 GT, this makes the rear almost as spacious as the 5 Series with a similar size boot too. As the boot opens like a notch, there is a lot of scope to load it with bigger things, which could be tight in a regular sedan boot. As there is a spare wheel, not much space is on offer in the boot.

BMW 3 GT 2017 Performance

BMW 3 Series GT gives you a choice of two powertrains. The TwinPower Turbo 4 cylinder diesel engine produces 190bhp of power and 400Nm of torque at a low rpm kick off at 1750 right till 2500rpm. The TwinPower Turbo 2.0-litre petrol engine, on the other hand is the new entry in the portfolio.

It produces 252bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. The 8-speed Steptronic Sport Transmission manages to squeeze in the last drop of juice from the motor, extracting a nice peppy performance out of the machine with a very strong mid-range.

The diesel engine doesn’t just has good performance, it also returns a higher mileage too. This plays in the favor of the sedan. To begin with, it can reach 100km/hr in about 9 seconds and yet it returns close to 16km/l in the city and about 19km/l on the highway. This makes it stand out in the crowd. There is even an eco mode, which further enhances the efficiency.

Verdict

Living true to its reputation, the BMW 3 Series GT is a joyful ride offering practicality for the day to day usage. It doubles up as a family car ready to do much long miles on a call, promising a comfortable ride to its occupants. At the same time, this is the only vehicle that is offered at this price, so a good option instead of buying the conventional sedan.
