Volkswagen Ameo has been launched for INR 5.8 lakhs on-road, Mumbai. This is the base model and at the moment, it will be made available only with a petrol engine. This will be made available with three variants to begin with. The Ameo will be coming with a new improved diesel engine, but that will be at a later stage. The Ameo will have a 1.5-litre diesel and a seven-speed DSG option as well.
Volkswagen Ameo Design
The Volkswagen Ameo’s design inspiration is shared with the Polo and the Vento. This compact sedan resembles more of the Polo, with a two slat grille along with the pulled back headlamps. The headlamps are double barrelled and have a smoked effect. The fog lamps are the ones that we have seen on the Polo. The side profile is very Polo-ish with a small boot that is slapped at its back. On close observation of the side profile, one can notice that some length of the front bumper has been shaved as the Polo is almost four metres in length. A lot of the bits on the Ameo are shared with the Polo. Recently, the company even launched the limited editions of the Polo and the Vento.
The rear of the Ameo looks somewhat like the Skoda Rapid. It gets two diagonal strakes similar to the Skoda. On the other hand, the tail lamp design is squarish and it resembles the Polo/Vento design. The Ameo resembles the Volkswagen family of vehicles. It doesn’t look as well integrated as the Vento or even the Polo.
Volkswagen Ameo Interiors
The Ameo is based on the Polo and the Vento and it resembles the interior styling too. The dashboard has black and beige dual tone interiors. There is a three-spoke steering wheel with audio controls that are mounted on it. The indicator stalk even has cruise control on it. Then the controls for the driver information system is also on the wheel. The instrument cluster houses the driver information system and the twin dials for engine speed and road speed. The centre console is made up a touchscreen system (Volkswagen hasn’t announced the official features list) and a climate control. The Polo and Vento are offered with these, so we can expect even the Ameo to get them. The touchscreen system has MirrorLink, which can show your Android or Apple smartphone’s display on the touchscreen. The Ameo even has reverse parking camera and dual airbags with ABS.
The front row seats on the Ameo are large and offer good support for lumbar and side. There is good enough space for tall people be it for the legs or the head. The rear seat isn’t the most spacious of the lot, but it is decent for an average Indian. There is a real AC vent and even a single cup holder too. The rear can seat only two in comfort. From what we understand this is a compact sedan for those who will like to drive it themselves. For those who are chauffeur driven will have to move the front seat ahead.
The boot of the Ameo is something that has impressed as. It is extremely large and it does stand out in size.
There is sufficient space to keep your smartphone, cupholders and one litre bottle can fit in all four bottles. The Ameo even has automatic headlamps and even rain sensing wipers as well.
Volkswagen Ameo Engine and Performance
The Volkswagen Ameo has been launched with a 1.2-litre petrol engine with a five-speed manual. This engine has been tuned for better mileage than performance. But there is no doubt about the convenience with which it drives. There is no need to shift gears that often, whether you drive it in city or are cruising on the highway. The power rating of this petrol engine is 75bhp if you need the numbers. This engine doesn’t have that excess torque that will boost in when you touch a certain rpm, but this has linear power like other petrol engines. One down side is the engine noise that makes it a bit diesel like sound. This isn’t something that is a good bit.
Volkswagen Ameo Mileage
We have driven the Ameo only for about 80-90kms with a mix of city and highway. In this it has returned about 13.8km/l. We will be doing a complete detailed review of the Ameo soon. So, hang on as we shall soon be getting the figures to you.
Volkswagen Ameo Driving Dynamics
Volkswagen Ameo is built on the Polo platform and that is one car that we have loved with regards to driving dynamics. The ride is supple on most of the occasions and it doesn’t feel unsettled or jiggery even on bad roads. The suspension irons out most of the road shocks. In terms of handling, this is one of the best in its segment. Even the steering response is good. The electronic steering wheel makes it light and convenient to drive in the city.
