Maruti Swift DZire 2016 Design

Maruti has improved the styling of the Maruti Swift DZire  after the recent facelift version and the car appear a bit more contemporary. The sharper exteriors, smoother lines and a better integrated boot make it quite attractive. The front has the larger pulled-back headlamps, a single slat chrome grille, an all new bumper and new fog lamps with chrome bezels  The thick chrome grille doesn’t look very appealing but the bezels for the front fog lamps does looks stylish and attractive. The side profile remains fairly unchanged however there are a new set of alloy wheels that are used on the Maruti Swift DZire . The rear largely remains the same and has a ‘Auto Gear Shift’ badging on the boot lid.  The tail lamps have got an update.

Maruti DZire 2016 Interiors

Maruti DZire AMT_10

On the inside, Maruti Swift Dzire 2016 has an upmarket feel with soft touch materials and a pleasing design. The dashboard doesn’t have a clattered layout and there is the same twin dial instrument cluster with driver information system sandwiched between. The three-spoke steering wheel on the DZire is the same as that on the Swift as well. It gets controls for audio and even telephone connectivity. The integrated music system comes with a set of speakers and tweeters.

There is sufficient stowage space in the DZire when it comes for holding bottles or cups. The front door pockets can hold one litre bottle each and there is space to keep other knick knacks, be it ahead of the gear lever or between the front seats. There is a pop-out cup holder as well for the co-driver, which is below the side AC vent. There is some space to even keep small things like pens in a slot just above the glove box.  The ZDi variant , which is the one that has AMT, gets engine start/stop button, front and rear charging socket, electrically foldable rear view mirrors, audio and Bluetooth control on the steering wheel and reverse parking sensors to name a few. In terms of safety and security, the car has dual airbags, ABS with EBD, automatic door locks , immobiliser and security alarm.

Maruti Swift DZire 2016 rear seat space

Maruti Swift DZire 2016 Space

The upholstery feels nice and the seats are soft and comfortable. These are good for short drives in the city. The rear seats come with a 60:40 split. This isn’t the case with any other compact sedan and Maruti Swift DZire  is the only one that features this option. This makes the Maruti Swift DZire  highly desirable product when it comes to features and space. The front row seats have sufficient space for tall people, while the rear seats have decent row. The central tunnel at the rear is raised and this means that the third person at the back might find it tight. The boot on the Maruti Swift DZire  is a let down. Now, the DZire has been built to be under four metres to reduce the taxes, so the boot is a compromise on the DZire. But then you buy a compact sedan, to get the three-box status than actually using the boot.

Maruti Swift DZire 2016 Engine

Maruti DZire AMT diesel engine

The Maruti Swift DZire  diesel AMT has the 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced engine breathing under the hood. The engine churns out a healthy 74bhp of power and 190Nm of peak torque and is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox with AMT. This engine is a proven one and does duty in many cars in the country.  This engine in its manual avatar is very easy to drive, however in the AMT it makes your drive stress free when you get behind the wheel. The clutch-less technology makes driving very comfortable in heavy city traffic conditions.

Maruti DZire AMT gear

Maruti Swift DZire AMT

The Maruti Swift DZire  AMT is a sprightly performer. There is a bit of a lag initially but the car pulls strongly after 2000rpm. Something that we liked was that it comes with a ‘creep’ function, which is generally found in automatic cars. The creep function stops the car from rolling the opposite direction while standing still and also there is no need to accelerate in case you want to just crawl ahead.  The AMT also has a manual mode and it helps when you want a sportier drive. The manual mode is best used during overtaking, where the driver can decide when to change gears according to the situation.

The car feels well-balanced in terms of power delivery and ease of driving, though we would have preferred a slightly more linear surge of power, once the turbo kicks in. However, the thing is that the Maruti Swift DZire  has not done away with any of its fun to drive mannerisms in the AMT and the manual mode is just like driving the manual variant albeit without a clutch. For city driving, this is an ideal choice.

Maruti Swift DZire 2016 Ride and Handling

The ride is good and the car manages to soak up most undulations on the road. It is comfortable to sit in and be driven also. The rear suspension is softer for better ride for those who are chauffeur driven. In terms of handling, the car is sharp and responds well to steering inputs, though a little more feedback would do. But the one major advantage of this light steering wheel is the ease of driving in city. When you have to drive in tight lanes or park in tight spots, the light steering wheel isn’t cumbersome to steer. The Maruti Swift DZire  hasn’t been built to have phenomenal handling, it is tuned for a better ride quality.

Maruti Swift DZire AMT: Should you buy it?

We have always believed that AMTs are here to stay. They make driving much more easier and neither does one have to shell out excessively like in an automatic, nor does one suffer due lower fuel efficiency. With traffic in the cities getting worse by the day, buying an AMT is the best way to reduce stress and fatigue levels, if you are self-driven.

The Maruti Swift DZire  diesel AMT makes for a sensible choice for those who drive a lot within the city and also have occasional long runs. For those who are chauffeur-driven and do not have much running we recommend the petrol version. The Maruti Swift DZire  AMT costs INR 9.35 lakhs  (on-road, Mumbai).  The only present competitor it has is the Tata Zest, which also has a diesel engine, with AMT.
