Finally the Abarth Punto is here and we have got our hands on it. Fiat is enhancing its product portfolio range and the new ones to enter are the Abarth Punto hatchback and the Avventura, powered by Abarth. This is the new hot hatchback from the Italian car market in India.

If you recall Fiat was the first to get the Palio 1.6 GTX back in 2001 and after that there haven’t been many hot hatchbacks that our market has witnessed. We take it for a quick spin on the roads of Delhi to find out how good is this hot hatchback.

Abarth Punto Exterior

In terms of styling, the Abarth Punto does look a lot different from the Punto Evo in terms of styling. It gets the Abarth decals and then all the Fiat badges are replaced by Abarth’s Scorpions. The Abarth Punto also has the 16-inch Abarth alloy wheels that are drool-worthy and the tyres are also 195/55R16 tyres also. The fog lamp surrounds are now red in colour and not the chrome that could be spotted on the Punto Evo. Then there is also the new Abarth red stickering. The Abarth Punto can be easily spotted in parked amongst multiple Puntos. The Abarth Punto will be coming in Pearl White and Hip Hop Black. Then there is also the chrome exhaust tip that we had seen on the Linea T-JET as well.

Abarth Punto Interior

The Abarth Punto’s interiors aren’t much different from that of the Punto. The Scorpion logo takes over the Fiat logo everywhere in the hatchback. The interior styling is the same, however the new bits are the instrument cluster that have a hint of yellow in them and then there is the stitching on the seats. The seats are the same as the Abarth and the other new addition is the new audio bluetooth streaming feature.

The biggest difference as under the hood, it is the 1.4-litre T-JET engine that produces 145bhp and this is the most performance one can get in the country for this price. The initial pull from this engine is moderate, but it is later on that there is a gush of boundless torque that comes in when the turbo kicks in. This engine has a strong mid-range and the other good aspect is the soft clutch pedal. There is sufficient power to overtake in city or even the highway. The transmission is a five-speed manual and this is a bit too notchy. This is the only downside of this transmission. To overtake in city, one needs to do some amount of working with the gear shifts.

We haven’t got a chance to do a mileage run either, as we drove the hot hatchback for a few kilometres only.

Abarth Punto Ride

The ride of the Abarth Punto is sorted and it does absorb most of the road shocks without any issues. The handling of the Abarth has to be tested when we get our hands on the hatchback for a long time. The Abarth Punto is very fast for its price and it does a 0-100km/hr in 8.8 seconds as per Fiat.

Abarth Punto Verdict

The price of the Punto is INR 11 lakhs (on-road, Delhi), which is a tad steep, but then the smile that this hatchback gets is just priceless. If you are buying something that is value for money, then this isn’t the hatchback for you. This is an affordable speed thrilling SUV.
