Jeep had unveiled the Grand Commander in China, earlier this year. This is a seven-seater new SUV that will debut in China. Recently while talking to FCA India head, Kevin Flynn, he told us that Jeep is readying a product with 3 rows, based on the Compass. This means that Jeep is planning to take on the big SUV segment in India. It will not be localised but will be sold in India, to grab some more market share in the premium SUV segment. The main rival for it will be the Toyota Fortuner.

The Grand Commander is based on the Yuntu concept, which was showcased last year at the Shanghai Motor Show. This is another product from Jeep for emerging markets. In all likelihood, this will be coming to India, via the CKD route. Jeep has plans for getting the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler as CKD units soon, as both these SUVs are currently fully imported, in the form of CBUs and hence are expensive. The Jeep Compass is currently the driver of the Jeep brand in India. It has garnered a strong pull in the market and is selling good numbers as well. Jeep also plans to get a smaller SUV, which is the Renegade. This will be launched next year.
