Road trips are on an all time high and there is some more good news for road trippers and travel buffs. A new Expressway between Mumbai and Delhi is being planned. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that this new road will be connecting Delhi and Mumbai. The cost of building this new expressway will be to the tune of Rs. 1 lakh crore. In addition the ministry has also expressed a desire to build Chambal expressway, that would be connected to the Delhi-Mumbai expressway. This expressway would help stated like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, in being connected.

As per a statement, ”A sum of Rs 1 lakh crore will be spent on this expressway … Nitin Gadkari outlined major initiatives of his ministry for de-congestion of Delhi NCR. A total of ten projects are underway costing Rs 35,600 crore,” it said.

As per Nitin Gadkari, about 40,000 commercial vehicles enter Delhi on a daily basis and they cause pollution and congestion in the state. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway was thought of to ease traffic in east Delhi. There is work going on a signal-free corridor from Dhaula Kuan to Airport has been awarded and will cost Rs. 260 crore. This would act as a major convenience factor for commuters and will save considerable time in daily travel.

Gadkari added that a eight-lane fully access-controlled Dwarka Expressway is being developed in four packages for Rs 9,500 crore. While three packages have already been awarded, the work on the expressway is likely to start in a month’s time. There is also a lot of re-development happening in Gurugram to ease traffic.

It may be recalled that India’s first Expressway was completed in the early 2000s between Mumbai and Pune. For a long time it remained the only true Expressway in the country, till the Yamuna Expressway came up, several years later. Now, the future will see more such expressways coming up, which iwill help in faster commuting, not only for passenger cars, but for goods transport as well. This will save time, fuel and of course cost.
