As per Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, all four wheelers in India will come fitted with number plates from the factory.  A customer will not be required to buy a number plate from either the dealer of the aftermarket. Also, the cost of these number plates will be included in the vehicle’s price. The actual number can be engraved or embossed later on by authorized agencies.

At present, different states procure a number plate from different sources. This does not have uniformity. Gadkari said, ”We have taken an important decision. Now, manufacturers will fit the plates and embossing will be done later through machine.

Naturally, the price of the plate will be included in car’s cost and the consumer will get some relief”, he said. The minister said the new technology number plates were intended to bring relief not only to consumers but also to bring in uniformity across states as each state used to buy these plates earlier. The prices for number plates procured by states range between Rs. 800 to Rs. 40,000, he said.

Currently, the licence plate number is issued by the district-level Regional Transport Office (RTO) of respective states. Gadkari also added that there would be no compromise in terms of security as far as vehicles were concerned. Secutrity norms will be same vehicles including economy and luxury vehicles. “We will not compromise with security….

what security norms we have done for economy models, same is for luxury and SUVs,” he said, to ET.

Often we see illegal number plates on cars. These number plates are not made as pr the guidelines of the RTO. People use fancy fonts and pictures on number plates.

At tuimes a number plate doesn’t even bear a number, bit the name of the owner. These practices are in violation of the law.

As safety norms are getting more stringent, the license plates also will be regularised. The government has recently made it mandatory for all cars manufactured after July 2019 to have air bags for drivers and seat-belt reminders,. There will also be a speed alert system beyond 80 km/h and reverse parking sensors will also be mandatory..

As per the notification issued by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry, “Motor vehicles of category M1 (cars), manufactured on and after the 1st day of July, 2019, shall comply with the additional safety features and its requirements stipulated in AIS-145 -2017,”Many initiatives to curb pollution are also being taken. The introduction of BSVI norms is one of those.
