Former ace cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has received a letter form union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari, urging him to become the brand ambassador for road safety. With the increase in road accidents and growing negligence about road safety, though efforts being taken by authorities, it seems it is now imperative to involve famous personalities to propagate safety to people. Will Sachin Tendulkar be the road safety brand ambassador? We’ll have to wait to see that.

“As you had indicated in your letter, it is an undenying fact that the road safety is matter of serious concern for all of us. Almost one and a half lakh people lose their lives every year in road accidents. despite various road safety improvement programmes are in place, the road traffic injuries leading to deaths, disabilities and subsequent hospitalisation causing severe socio-economic costs, still remain a cause of grave concern in our country,” is what Gadkari wrote in the letter to Tendulkar.

Gadkari also said the Sachin’s involvement in road safety advocacy programmes, which will be at his convenience, would be very helpful in creating a social movement and awareness on road safety. Sachin Tendulkar has been a brand ambassador for two car brands. Earlier for Fiat and now for BMW. Fans of Sachin Tendulkar follow him seriously and the cricketer is also believed to be considering safety as an important aspect in everything.

It is believed that about 85% of helmets sold in India are either non-ISI marked or are sub-standard brands. As per ISI Helmet Manufacturers Association, about 275 manufacturers posses ISI certification and they have capacity to produce at least 2.75 lakh helmets a day.

“Roughly, the daily sale of helmets in country is about 2.5 to 2.7 lakh. So, we have the licence to manufacture quality helmet, but people are buying spurious products even as they are paying the full amount of an ISI-marked helmet,” Rajeev Kapur of the association has said.

While ISI mark is important, we also think that imported helmets which come with internal safety markings, should also be officially considered. There have been cases where riders have been fined for not having an ISI mark on the helmets, while they were using helmets having international safety ratings. There are certifications like DOT, ECE and Snell which are the most popular safety ratings for helmets all over the world.
