We had revealed earlier that Royal Enfield is working on a new platform for electric bikes and will be launching electric motorcycles in times to come. The company officials have also confirmed that they have a large team which is working on the development of electric motorcycles. While every manufacturer is jumping into the electric arena, Royal Enfield also understands that the future will be driven by electric vehicles. Thus the company has invested in getting their electric technology going. The new platform which the company is working on, will be able to underpin not only one Royal Enfield Electric Bike, but several others as well. This shall also include long range bikes.

What will the Royal Enfield electric bikes be like? Obviously, they will be devoid of the legendary thump! These will be a silent Royal Enfield, something which is unimaginable. Would you want to buy a Royal Enfield electric motorcycle? Read on further.

Rudratej Singh, president, Royal Enfield had earlier confirmed saying, “We are working on various projects. Electric platform is one of the projects, where we have a large number of team working towards this. At the right time and at the right place, we will announce our plan.”

Nothing has been officially shared by the company regarding the launch, yet. Royal Enfield has already begun working on a new platform for sometime now. The first electric bike is expected to be launched by 2020. The company would like to test the product thoroughly before launching in the market.

Royal Enfield may go in for an electric bike with a range of approximately 200 kms. This bike will have a like power output of 65bhp and a torque of around 50Nm. This will be a heavy bike at around 200kgs of kerb weight. The chain drive will be replaced by a belt drive in this electric motorcycle. This will be for the for the first time that a Royal Enfield bike will get a belt drive.

The Royal Enfield electric motorcycle will be different form the current breed of electric bikes in the making. It will retain its retro looks. That is USP of RE. Most people buy a Royal Enfield for its classic looks. Hence, the company would be making the electric bike with a retro design.

The look of the Classic 350 / 500 will be retained as that is the essence of a Royal Enfield. An electric motor and batteries will replace the engine in the bay. What will be most astonishing is the fact that this will be a silent Royal Enfield.  The instrument cluster is expected to be a digital one, but it will have retro undertones.

The RE electric motorcycle will not get any high number of features. It will have a digital instrument pod. This will have information such as battery indicator, side stand warning, temperature gauge, gear indicator, tachometer, tripmeters, speedometer and low charge warning. It will also have a charging facility for mobile phones. The side panels will be identical an will offer storage space. The mock fuel tank may also be utilized as a storage space. It will get LED daytime running lights.

  • I love the Royal Enfield brand.
    I am accustomed to the conventional right side shift. Where would the shift on the electric bikes, or a kit will be available to relocate if desired?
