We had recently confirmed that Toyota will be getting the new Vios to India next year and it will come only with a petrol engine. Today, we even have confirmed information from one of our sources that Toyota Yaris will be coming in next year. This will be competing with the Baleno, i20 and the Jazz. Toyota has plans to get this new premium hatchback in a couple of months after the launch of the Vios. This new hatchback will be manufactured in the sedan plant along with the Corolla Altis. We had reported two years ago that Toyota’s strategy was to get all UVs before 2017 and then shift its focus to hatchbacks and sedans. So, the company has already cemented its plans.
So, the rumours for the Yaris Ativ aren’t true. The hatchback version will be making its way. It will be stylish, offer features at par with competition and have good quality materials too. This will be a drift away from the Liva and towards the Toyota most buyers prefer. A fresh design for the Indian car market too.
Toyota Yaris’ design is swanky. There is a smiley front grille with the Toyota badge. The front bumper houses the mesh grille. The headlamps are sharp and they look stylish too. The side indicators are on the side of the headlights. There is daytime running LEDs and fog lamps that looks similar to the Fortuner. The side profile looks simple and basic. This somewhat remains of the Renault Megane’s glass area.
The rear styling is also attractive. It has small leaf-shaped tail lamps. The rear looks a tad broader and bigger than the front. There is tiny integrated spoiler too. The tyres should be 15-inch on the new Yaris. There will be enough oomph for buyers to consider this hatchback. The design will attract younger audiences.
Toyota is offering stylish and funky interiors. There should be body-coloured and black dual-tone dashboard. The steering wheel will be multi-functional and three dials will form the instrument cluster. There will be a large touchscreen system with all the features one is looking for. Climate control underneath it. The space in the Yaris should be good enough. Maybe a comfortable seater for five with sufficient boot space too.
Toyota Yaris Specifications
The new Yaris will be coming on the same platform like the Vios and Etios. This new hatchback will also be offered with petrol engine. Our sources state that the Yaris shall be offered with a petrol engine only. There is a good chance that this will be the same engine like the Vios, but different tuning. This will be a 1.5-litre petrol. We learn that Toyota wants to give the customers the best in class performance from the petrol engine, which isn’t the case today. Most of the 1.2-litre petrol premium hatchbacks do feel underpowered and Toyota will not want to deliver that to its buyer.
This engine will be offered with a five-speed manual and the automatic will be a CVT. Toyota wants to break the monotony of the petrol engines in the premium hatchback segment. This it can achieve with the Yaris. This will mean more initial cost but there will be an improvement in its performance and maybe even mileage. Majority of the sales in this segment are petrol.
Toyota Yaris Launch Date in India
We reckon the launch of the Yaris will be in the second half of 2018. This will be a few months after the Vios launch. Toyota is gearing up for an all new set of vehicles to set the market very soon.
Toyota Yaris Price in India
The Yaris should be priced at about Rs 5.5 lakhs to Rs 10 lakhs (on-road). This will be ideal pricing for a hatchback with this engine and power. We reckon, this will be the most powerful hatchback in its segment, if we don’t consider the Abarth Punto. The power should be about 105-110bhp.
The Yaris will go up against the Honda Jazz facelift, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20 and also the new upcoming Tata X451. This will be an all new hatchback too. All these vehicles are from well-known brands that have affordable service back-up. Hence, it will be a tough call. Peugeot is also working on the 208 and there is Kia with the Soul. All these will make this segment an interesting one. The Kia Soul and the Peugeot 208 will be launched by early 2019. There is also the Volkswagen Polo and the Fiat Punto Evo, which have grown old in design and lack the service support and affordable maintenance options.
Toyota did miss out on a stylish hatchback and sedan. This will be fulfilled soon. The Daihatsu brand will be made affordable vehicles. Hence, Toyota will have a stronger badge value making it a much stronger and better product too. The Daihatsu will be like the Datsun brand. It will have more affordable and value for money products. This will have lesser focus on high quality materials, and more towards affordable mobility. Toyota will also be getting the Innova Crysta 2018, which will offer some more features on it. This will be the new model year upgrade for this MUV. The plans to get back the old Innova as Innova Cross will be happening as Toyota has discontinued the old Innova platform now.
