Toyota will be getting their popular Yaris hatchback to India. This is good news for all Toyota fans. The Yaris has long been in the waiting and this time Toyota has taken the mantle and decided to go to war with the established players in this segment. The Etios Liva, though a frugal and powerful car, did not become a big success and lacked in a few areas like design and build. The Yaris is about to change that. The Yaris will be launched in the premium hatchback segment and will compete with the Baleno, i20 and the Jazz.

We had reported two years ago that Toyota’s strategy was to get all its utility vehicles before 2017 and then shift its focus to hatchbacks and sedans. So, this is coming true as Toyota has firmed up their plans. The hatchback version will be making its way into India. This is a stylish car and has all features desired. The build quality also will be good. Toyota will bring in an exciting looking hatchback that is popular all over the world.

Design

This car will have swanky interiors. It will be thrilling to have such interiors in a Toyota hatchback in India! There is a smiley front grille with the Toyota badge. It remind us of the Corolla Altis. The front bumper houses the mesh grille. The headlamps are sharp and they look stylish too. The side indicators are on the side of the headlights. There is daytime running LEDs and fog lamps that looks similar to the Fortuner. The side profile looks simple and basic. The design language of newer Toyota can clearly be seen in the Yaris.

The rear styling is also attractive. The taillamps are leaf-shaped ones. The rear looks a tad broader and bigger than the front. There is a small integrated spoiler too. The Yaris will get 15-inch alloys. These will be diamond-cut ones which will look attractive. There will be enough oomph for buyers to consider this hatchback. The design will attract younger audiences. The tear-drop bezels from fog lamps also look unique.

Toyota Yaris Specifications

The new Yaris will share its platform with the Vios and Etios. This new hatchback will also be offered with petrol engine. Our sources state that the Yaris will come with a petrol engine only. There is a good chance that this will be the same engine like the Vios, but with a different state of tune. This will be a 1.5-litre petrol. We learn that Toyota wants to give the customers the best in class performance from the petrol engine, which isn’t the case today. Most of the 1.2-litre petrol premium hatchbacks do feel underpowered and Toyota will not want to deliver that to its buyer. Moreover, the sales of diesel powered cars is slowly on the decline, hence Toyota may not be too interested in that segment.

2018 Toyota Yaris

The engine will come mated to a five-speed manual transmission. There will also be an option of  an automatic, which will be a CVT, similar to the Corolla Altis. We love the way the Corolla drives and expect the same from the Yaris too. Toyota wants to break the monotony of the petrol engines in the premium hatchback segment. This it can achieve with the Yaris. This will mean more initial cost but there will be an improvement in its performance and maybe even mileage. Majority of the sales in this segment are petrol.

Competition

The Yaris will compete against the Honda Jazz facelift, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20 facelift and also the new upcoming Tata X451 hatchback. This will be an all new hatchback too. All these vehicles are from well-known brands that have affordable service back-up. Hence, it will be a tough call for Toyota. They will have to increase the capacity of their service centers and also expand their network to accommodate more numbers. Peugeot is also working on the 208 and there is Kia with the Soul. All these will make this segment an interesting one. The Kia Soul and the Peugeot 208 will be launched by early 2019. There is also the Volkswagen Polo and the Fiat Punto Evo, which have grown old in design and lack the service support and affordable maintenance options.

Soon, there will be a stylish hatchback from Toyota, which was being missed. The Daihatsu brand will be used for more affordable vehicles. Hence, Toyota will have a stronger badge value making it a much stronger and better product too. The Daihatsu will be like how the Datsun brand is. It will have more affordable and value for money products. This will have lesser focus on high quality materials, and more towards affordable mobility. Toyota will also be getting the Innova Crysta 2018, which will offer some more features on it. This will be the new model year upgrade for this MUV. The plans to get back the old Innova as Innova Cross will be happening as Toyota has discontinued the old Innova platform now.

  • Thank you very much for the information Motor Octane. I am looking for an automatic hatchback and I currently looking forward to buy Swift DDIS AMT by June 2018 but if Toyota is launching the Yaris 1.2 CVT by the end of 2018 then I would gladly wait for it. Can you confirm the launch of Yaris by the end of 2018 ?
