Just a little more patience, but finally there is good news for biking enthusiasts! KTM, the owner of Husqvarna brand of motorcycles will roll out in India from 2020. It was earlier thought that the launch of the bikes will take place in 2019 KTM will utilize Bajaj Auto’s Chakan plant to manufacture these bikes. KTM already has a capacity to produce 1 lakh KTM bikes at Chakan. The plan is to add another capacity of 1 lakh units for Husqvarna India brand. This will take the total capacity to 2 lakh units per annum for both KTM and Husqvarna brands.

Husqvarna Motorcycles of Sweden was founded in 1903. It is the world’s second oldest motorcycle brand. KTM had secured a long-term license agreement in the year 2013. Husqvarna has seen a sharp rise in its global sales since then. KTM CEO Stefan Pierer said, “It has been agreed upon and they (Husqvarna bikes) should be launched in India by 2020. That means by the end of 2019 the manufacturing should begin at Chakan.”  Husqvarna brands – White Arrow and Black Arrow will be made in Chakan, near Pune. These bikes will use platforms of KTM and will range between 150cc to 390cc. The bikes will be sold in the Indian market and also exported. It is expected that there will be a separate dealer network for Husqvarna.

After the take over of Husqvarna brand by KTM, it has been selling mostly enduro /off-road bikes in most markets. This time, there are plans to build on-road and street bikes as well. This will be more acceptable in emerging markets and markets like India. However, we do hope Husqvarna India offers some good off-roaders in India as well, as currently there is a dearth of good and affordable off-roading machines.

The introduction of Husqvarna India is indeed a good thing as it will open up more options for motorcycle buyers and further expand the market for fun bikes. The off-road heritage of Husqvarna will be an added advantage for this brand to get established in India.
