Iconic scooter brand Lambretta is believed to be looking at making a re-entry in the Indian market. Lambretta was a famous and sought after scooter, which sold for almost 4 decades, from the 1950’s to the 80’s.

The Italian marquee has made a stylish comeback at the EICMA 2017 and there are plans for India as well.

Lambretta is owned by Innocenti S.A. of Switzerland. Do you think it will be exciting enough if it comes to India? Would you buy one?

Lambretta scooters were manufactures by API and were once regarded as premium scooters. This Italian brand was previously owned by Fiat as well. Those who have used one, even today can’t stop talking about it. In india, the brand still is quite well known and this might be an advantage for the company which is looking at re-entering the market. However, it will not be easy, as the market is extremely competitive and the support system needs to be strong if the brand wants to succeed in India.

Lambretta had showcased its models V50, V125 and V200 Special at the 2017 EICMA show.  V50 Special, is fitted with a 49.5cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine, with a carburetor, which produces 3.5bhp at 7,500rpm and 3.4Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. The engine is mated to a CVT , which comes on all the models. The V125 and V200 may be contenders for the Indian market. The V125 Special has a 124.7cc fuel-injected engine which produces 10.1bhp at 8,500rpm and 9.2Nm of torque at 7,000rpm. The V200 Special has a 168.9cc engine. This is also fuel-injected and makes 12.1bhp at 7,500rpm, and 12.5Nm of torque at 5,500rpm. Lambretta 2017

It is interesting to note that many iconic brands are now coming back to India. Vespa had made a re-entry a few years back and has been quite successful, though in certain pockets.

We reckon that Lambretta would be pitched head-on with the Vespa scooter range. This will make it interesting and also another choice for customers, who look for stylish modes of transport and want to be different from the crowd.

The Lambretta range of scooters will be manufactured in Taiwan. They will be introduced in the European market in 2018. We can expect this brand to come to India only in 2019. There is no information yet about manufacturing these scooters in India. We shall keep you updated on the developments. Keep watching this space.
