You have read it first on MotorOctane. Toyota has plans to get the Yaris and Vios to India and both will be launched next year. One of our sources, who didn’t want to be identified mentioned that Toyota is looking at getting the Vios first and then it will be followed by the Yaris.

This will be based on the same Etios platform and it will be manufactured in the same Toyota sedan plant. A majority of Toyota Etios sales were coming from the commercial segment. However that has now taken a hit. This is because in most of the metro cities, the taxi needs to be CNG and not diesel. Toyota doesn’t have factory-fitted CNG option and this has led to the reduction in numbers of the sales.

Reviving the Etios might not be a good option, hence the company is looking at getting all-new products on the same platform.

The Toyota Vios will be more luxurious and offer extra bells and whistles too. This will go up against the Honda City. The latest information is that this new sedan will come only with a petrol engine. There will not be a diesel on offer.

We have learnt that the brand is looking at getting only the petrol engine as the company is confident that majority of its buyers will look at petrol. Today, Honda City has higher number of petrol sales and this will be the product for Toyota too. The Maruti Ciaz and Hyundai Verna have higher diesel numbers though. We expect the Vios to come in first and this will be followed by the Yaris. This will be hatchback version.

Toyota Yaris front

The engines on offer will be the same 1.5-litre petrol, there will be major changes.

This will have a different injection, more valves, difference in timing belt etc. This will be upgraded to a new-generation engine and it should churn about 110-115bhp of power. This will make it at par with the Honda City. There will be a manual and an automatic transmission on offer. There will not be a diesel engine on offer on vehicle.

The future of Etios is something we aren’t very certain of. We reckon it might be discontinued for India, as Toyota doesn’t have enough manufacturing in its sedan plant.

We shall keep you updated with more as and when we have more information. Stay tuned to MotorOctane.com
