The first ever Tata Tigor Electric has been delivered today. Tata Motors had bagged an order of 10,000 units for the Indian car market and this is a major order for the company. Recently we had also stated that Ola Cabs has bought 400 electric Nanos from Jayem, which has purchased the body shells from Tata Motors and added its own electric motor and battery pack. Tata Motors is moving towards electric vehicles and there is no doubt in that.
Tata Motors recently won the order for electric vehicles and the tender meant delivering 10,000 units of this sedan to the government. This is a Rs 1,120 crore tender and the order consists to deliver 10,000 units of the electric Tigor at a price of Rs 10.16 lakhs without GST. Of all the players, Tata Motors had quoted the lowest price of all. This tender had Mahindra and Mahindra and even Nissan competing for it. In the end, it went to Tata Motors. This will help the company to boost its infrastructure to build electric vehicles.
At the moment, the Nano GenX, the Tiago and the regular version of the Tigor are manufactured in Sanand. The Sanand plant is capable of manufacturing about 2.5 lakh units annually. From the current reports its clear that the new Tigor electric will be manufactured in Sanand as the platform is built here, making it more easier to make the electric powertrain.
Tata Tiago EV was showcased in the UK and this same technology of drivetrain shall be used on the Tigor too. Tata Motors CEO and MD Guenter Butschek had stated that this tender will improve e-mobility and even help to enhance the electric vehicles infrastructure in India. Tata Motors will work on localising the same technology for the Tigor and even look at future sales of the electrically powered hatchback and sedan in India.
As per the tender, Tata Motors will deliver the first 500 units until November 2017 and the remaining 9,500 units in the next nine months of the intent letter. These electric vehicles will be used by the state-run government Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL). These will beused directly by the state or leased out for usage. This was an international bidding opportunity and with Tata taking the win, it was a proud moment for the Indian automotive industry.
The Tata Tiago EV gets a 85kW electric motor that has 200Nm of maximum torque. This drivetrain set-up has a range of about 100 kilometres, does 0-100km/hr in about 11 seconds and has a top speed of about 135km/hr. This shall be the same config for the Tigor too. Maybe some changes in the range, and it could see an improvement.

Tigor Electric Variants
Specific to the EESL order, the Tigor EV will be delivered in three trim variants – Base, Premium and High and will be available in ‘Pearlescent White’ colour with blue decals. Over the basic requirements of the tender, the Tigor EV, across the variants, would have FATC (Fully Automatic AC) to provide maximum comfort to its occupants. Equipped with a single speed, automatic transmission, the Tigor EV will also allow the customers to enjoy the driving experience, maximized efficiency and seamless acceleration. The electric drive systems for the Tigor EV is developed and supplied by Electra EV – a company established to develop and supply electric drive systems for the automotive sector.
Tata Tigor Electric Launch Date
The variant that will be launched shall be for the government’s use only. This variant will not come into production anytime this year for normal buyers. But we do expect that the Tigor EV will be made available to buyers by 2019. Before that it seems to be doubtful.
Tata Tigor Electric Price in India
As electric vehicles attract the least amount of taxation and even the on-road tax is fairly low, the pricing of this new Tigor electric should be about Rs 11.5 lakhs (on-road). This might come down with time as more and more electric vehicles are manufactured and production cost comes down. This will mean that the electric vehicles will become more affordable than ever. Government needs to work on the charging bit for all the electric vehicles as this needs better infrastructure and also more electricity too.
