2018 Maruti Swift

Maruti has been highly successful with the Swift. Since its launch in India in 2005, the first-generation has been moving things rapidly. The 2007 diesel engine launch changed the segment completely. The second-generation received overwhelming response too. The third-gen is now on its way. It is called as the Maruti Swift 2018. In markets like Europe and Japan, it has already been launched. India gets this new hatchback a bit later. The Indian market is one of the biggest markets for this hatchback. Still we are getting it late.

The new-gen Swift will be based on the Heartect platform. This is about 100-150kgs lighter than the current version. It will be wider, have longer wheelbase and more space on the inside. The engines will be the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel. This will come with manual and automatic (AMT) options. The biggest change will be the new addition of features for many. A new Z+ variant shall be offered. It will have projector headlamps, daytime running LEDs, touchscreen system, reverse camera, navigation, Android Auto and even Apple CarPlay. There will be more addition in features for rear passengers with rear AC mostly debuting this time. The new Swift will even have dual airbags and ABS as a standard feature. This means better safety.

2018 Maruti Swift India Launch Date

The new Maruti Swift 2018 will be unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo. This happens in February as Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch its all new hatchback for the Indian car market. The launch will be done in a month’s time after that. So, maximum by March 2018, the Swift will be available at the dealerships for test drives and purchase. The new car will be manufactured in the parent company’s Gujarat plant. Maruti will be purchasing the car at the same cost from the company. Suzuki is manufacturing the cars there are exporting to other markets already.

There shall not be a major change in the pricing of the new Maruti Swift. This is because it cannot undercut the Ignis and it cannot exceed the Baleno. So, it has to be priced between the two. The Optional models will be gone now. Dual airbags and ABS with EBD will be offered as a standard feature. Hence, the pricing will be similar to the outgoing Swift. We expect a jump of 15,000 to 20,000. There will not be a major hike apart from this.

2018 Maruti Swift Dimensions

Swift 2018

Ground Clearance

The length is almost the same. The major change is in the width and even the wheelbase. The wheelbase sees an increase of 20mm, which is good enough for a vehicle of this segment. As per the new ground clearance norms, there will be a change in the numbers. The new norms are to fully-load the vehicle and then check the clearance. Due to this, all the cars see a reduction of about 20-25mm with ease. After that, the 2018 Maruti Swift will see a reduction to 163mm, the same like the DZire 2017

Maruti Swift 2018 Variants

There shall be L, V, Z and Z+ variants on petrol and even a diesel engines. So a total of eight variants. Then there will six more variants with AMT, three on petrol and diesel. There will not be the optional variants as we had mentioned earlier. The Z+ will be a new variant and it shall offer more features. This one will see a major hike in the pricing.

2018 Maruti Swift Design

There is a lot of similarity with the new DZire. The front gets a large grille with minimal chrome. There are sharp looking headlamps. Z+ variant gets projector lamps with daytime running LEDs also. The bonnet shape is crowned now and has strakes. There is more matte black on the front and round fog lamps too. The car appears to be wider the current Swift.

New Maruti Swift RS rear

The silhouette is so much similar. At no point one will say it isn’t a Swift and at the same time, it has no connection to the current one. The C-pillar is blacked out. The rear door handle is mounted on the top. The roof is sloping. Wheels are bigger and tyres are 15-inch this time. The rear has minimal lines too. License plate is moved to the bumper. Tail lamps are LED and the design is neater. The new design looks fresh and has some new add-ons too. But, we aren’t certain if the changes are good enough. The rear glass appears to be smaller this time.  There could be some elements, which might not be liked by all.

2018 Maruti Swift Interior

The interiors of the new Swift 2018 are shared with the new DZire. To begin with, a neat dashboard that is all-black. It has a sporty looking steering wheel with flat bottom. The higher models get leather-wrapped wheel too. Instrument binnacle has twin dials and driver information system too. Centre console is made up of AC vents, touchscreen system and climate control. Touchscreen is the same like on any other Maruti vehicle. This has Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, reverse camera, navigation, bluetooth, USB and aux also. The mirrors are electrically adjustable too.

Apart from quality, other big change on the new Swift is the space. The front seats offer better support. The rear seats have improved knee room and seating comfort too. The boot is a tad larger than before. This makes it a better space for rear passengers and carrying luggage. We reckon, there could even be rear AC vents too, this time around.

5-speed manual & AMT

The concept of downsizing is good. You either lighten your platform or use smaller engines. Maruti has chosen the first option. Its major seller will be the 1.2-litre petrol K-Series engine. It is anyways the most powerful and most fun to drive engine in this segment. The lighter body weight will add on to the performance. So, Swift petrol shall be the most powerful engine in this segment. It is quiet. There is absolutely no noise or vibrations at low or even high engine speeds. This is a gem of an engine. There could be a Swift RS, but we aren’t sure when. Maruti could introduce it much later on. About 6-8 months after the launch of the regular Swift atleast.

2018 Maruti Swift RS

The diesel is a 1.3-litre. Today diesel engines in this segment have seen a reduction in numbers. But Swift diesel was one of the first powerful and hot seller too. Many consider it to be a good option even now. This engine has decent NVH, and it has good enough noise evident. The insulation is decent and still you can hear the engine at 3,000rpm. The power is good, but it is a bit jerky in AMT when you shift to a lower gear. Both the engines will come with 5-speed manual and AMT options.

2018 Maruti Swift Mileage

Petrol (Company Claimed)

Diesel (Company Claimed)

The new-gen Maruti’s have good enough mileage. The petrol and the diesel engines have good efficiency. The petrol engine in manual avatar will return 13km/l in the city, AMT will be 12km/l. The diesel manual is about 17km/l and AMT is 16km/l in the city.

2018 Maruti Swift Competition

The competition of the Swift are majorly the Hyundai Grand i10, Maruti Ignis, Ford Figo and even the Mahindra KUV100. These are the major competing cars. The Ford Ecosport, Vitara Brezza and even the Nexon somewhat overlap at some price points. So, we cannot ignore them not even the Baleno

    Hi Tushar
The price will be about 20,000-30,000 cheaper than the new DZire

  • Tushar

Motor octane team, does the prices mentioned are onroad prices or exshowroom? Dzire price hiked about 30-40k from old model to new. So next generation swift’s pricing might be biggest suspense. I am waiting for nextgenswift.
