The new-gen Swift is an all new car and much better that its predecessors. The new Heartect platform underpins this new hatchback. The new Swift now has better strength and rigidity. This makes the new Swift a lot more powerful and agile. There is a a weight reduction in the new Maruti Swift 2018 and an increment in the performance and even features.

The engines remain the same in the Swift, but it now has a lighter chassis. This has a positive effect on the performance of the current engines and also to the fuel efficiency of the car. 2018 Maruti Swift’s major seller will be the 1.2-litre petrol K-Series engine. This is the most powerful in its segment and also fun to drive. The lighter body weight delivers better performance. It is difficult for competition to beat the Swift petrol in terms of its performance. It is quiet. There is no noise or vibrations at low or even high engine speeds. This is a gem of an engine indeed. There could be a Swift RS, but we aren’t sure when. Maruti could introduce it much later on.

2018 Maruti Swift side 1

The diesel is a 1.3-litre unit. This segment has been moving towards petrol for the last few years. However, the 2018 Swift diesel will be a good seller still.  Many consider it to be a good option even now. Also in smaller towns, people still prefer the diesel version. This engine has decent NVH, and it has good enough noise evident. The insulation is ok and still you can hear the engine at 3,000rpm. The 2018 Maruti Swift will have more than sufficient performance in both, just that the petrol will have better performance. The light body weight makes the engines perform even better.

Maruti Swift 2018 Variants

The new variants are Lxi, Vxi, Zxi and Zxi+ variants on petrol and even a diesel engines. So a total of eight variants. There will be four more variants with AMT, two on petrol and two on diesel. The Zxi+/Zdi+ will be new variants and shall offer more features. This one will see a major hike in the pricing and will overlap with base variants of the Baleno.

The Swift was first launched in 2005 and it had soon become one of the best sellers in the country, ever. In 2007 its diesel version was a game changer and upset the entire segment. The second-generation of this hatchback also got a very strong response and the numbers only kept growing. Now, the third-gen is preparing for another onslaught. There has been a lot of inquisitiveness in the market for this new hatchback.  The Indian market is the biggest markets for this car. The new Dzire was launched here first, to cash in on the compact sedan segment. Now, the company is focussing on the new Swift.

Ground Clearance

The overall length is identical, which is under 4 meters. The major change is in the width and even the wheelbase. The wheelbase sees an increase of 20mm, which is fairly good in this segment. As per the new ground clearance norms, there is a change in the numbers. The new norms are to fully-load the vehicle and then check the clearance. Due to this, all the cars see a reduction of about 20-25mm with ease. The 2018 Maruti Swift sees a reduction to 163mm, the same like the DZire 2017.

The new Swift is lighter than the earlier version by around 100kgs. It is wider and has a longer wheelbase as well. But it is still under 4 metres in length. The same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engines are available  in the new Swift. This time there is an automatic (AMT) option as well, both in petrol and diesel. The biggest change is the new addition of features. The top end will be loaded with projector headlamps, daytime running LEDs, touchscreen system, reverse camera, navigation, Android Auto and even Apple CarPlay. The rear seat space is also more this time. The new Swift has dual airbags and ABS as a standard feature. This means better safety. The car comes prepared in order to adhere to new rules coming in.

2018 Maruti Swift Design

This hatchback looks very similar to the new DZire. The front gets a large grille but with minimal chrome. The headlamps are very stylish. The new Z+ variant gets projector lamps with daytime running LEDs also. The bonnet shape is crowned now and has strakes. There s more matte black on the front and round fog lamps too. The car is wider than the outgoing Swift. The wide appearance also makes it look more premium. New Maruti Swift RS rear

The silhouette is similar to the outgoing model. The Swift retains its core design philosophy, hence one can easily recognize it. The C-pillar is a blackened one. The rear door handle is mounted on the top and is hidden. The roof is sloping. Wheels are bigger and tyres are 15-inch this time. The rear has minimal lines too. License plate has been shifted to the bumper. Tail lamps are LED and attractive to look at. The new design looks fresh and has some new add-ons too. It has to be seen how well customers receive this new design. The rear glass appears to be smaller this time. There could be some elements, which might not be liked by all.

New Maruti Swift 2018 Interior

The interiors are similar to the new DZire. However, the Swift 2018 has all-black interiors instead of a dual colour theme. It has a sporty looking steering wheel with flat bottom. The higher models get leather-wrapped wheel too. There is no faux-wood finish like the Dzire. Instrument consists of two dials and driver information system too. This is identical to the Dzire. Centre console is made up of AC vents, touchscreen system and climate control. Touchscreen is the same like on any other Maruti vehicle. This has Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, reverse camera, navigation, bluetooth, USB and aux also. The mirrors are electrically adjustable too.

Apart from quality, the increase in space is the biggest USP of the new Swift. The front seats offer better support too. The rear seats have improved knee room and seating comfort. The boot is a bit larger than before, not too much. This makes it a better space for rear passengers and carrying luggage. The luggage space increases by 58 litres, around 28% more than the second generation Swift. Around 24 mm more headroom, and a better seat back angle, further enhances the comfort in the rear seats.

Maruti Swift 2018 Colours

The colours on the new Swift 2018 are six of them. Following is the list

  • Prime Lucent Orange
  • SLD Fire Red
  • Prime Midnight Blue
  • Met Silky Silver
  • PRL Arctic White
  • Met Magma Grey

Maruti Swift 2018 Mileage

Petrol (Company Claimed)

21km/l

Diesel (Company Claimed)

27km/l

All Maruti’s rank high in terms of fuel efficiency. The petrol and the diesel engines have good efficiency. The petrol engine in manual avatar will return 13km/l in the city, AMT will be 12km/l. The diesel manual is about 17km/l and AMT is 16km/l in the city.

The power is good, but it is a bit jerky in AMT when you shift to a lower gear. Both the engines will come with 5-speed manual and AMT options. This will be another important product to top the sales chart in India.

Maruti Swift 2018 Competition

The competition of the Swift 2018 are majorly the Hyundai Grand i10, Maruti Ignis, Ford Figo and even the Mahindra KUV100. The advantage that the 2018 Swift has apart from the brand value it enjoys will be the features it will offer. Most of these aren’t even available on the competition. These are the major competing cars. The Ford Ecosport, Vitara Brezza and even the Nexon somewhat overlap at some price points. So, we cannot ignore them not even the Baleno.

  • Hi Tushar
The price will be about 20,000-30,000 cheaper than the new DZire

  • Motor octane team, does the prices mentioned are onroad prices or exshowroom? Dzire price hiked about 30-40k from old model to new. So next generation swift’s pricing might be biggest suspense. I am waiting for nextgenswift.
