The Renault Captur has not been selling as well as expected. There could be multiple reasons of that. One is the close pricing of it with the Duster. This had the buyers confused initially. Now the company has dropped the price of the Duster. However, the sales of Captur have not taken off. There are heavy discounts being offered on the Captur. These discounts are on vehicles manufactured in 2017, which have piled up at dealerships. In order to clear stocks for new arrivals, the company has offered discounts to the tune of Rs.1.25 lakhs.

This SUV is built on the B0 platform. It shares its underpinnings with the Duster. The Duster has also seen a major price drop recently. The Captur sold in Europe is built on a different platform. There is no similarity between the two. The B0 platform has been highly localised already, hence it brings a price benefit to the Captur. Renault India wants to get a stylish and modern SUV that will appeal to young and trendy car buyers. It reckons, this will be that SUV for them.

It is a highly localized product and comes with many new features. A 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines do duty on it. The diesel gets 108bhp of power and six-speed manual. There is no automatic or AMT on petrol or even diesel engine. No AWD also on offer.

Renault Captur Specifications

Max. Power 99bhp 109bhp
Peak Torque 150Nm 250Nm
Transmission 5-speed manual 6-Speed Manual

A 1.5-litre petrol engine churns about 99bhp of power and it produces about 150Nm of maximum torque. This engine is the same one that is offered on the Nissan Sunny too. It comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The petrol engine is silent and has low NVH too.

The 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine churns about 108bhp of power and 250Nm of maximum torque. This engine is the most commonly used diesel engine by Renault. The same one on the Duster diesel too. At the same time, there is more than sufficient torque to drive in the city and even to overtake. The NVH levels of this engine aren’t too loud, but the insulation inside the Captur is good enough. This enhances the interior comfort of the car.

Design

The biggest USP of this SUV is its styling. The design is modern and it looks fresh. Renault wants to make a bold statement with the new Captur. This SUV has a styling front grille, like other French Renault models. The headlamps are pulled back and they have LEDs. The front bumper has a lot of black on it and the fog lamps look cool too.

From the side, the design is of a crossover. It appears small in images, but in real it tall and long. This SUV is longer than the Duster. The wheel well seems to a tad empty and bigger tyres could have been offered. The rear looks stylish too. The tail lamp is small and there is contrast roof too. The ground clearance at 211mm is the highest in this segment. The glass area is small too.

Interiors

On the inside, the Captur has a lot of new elements. To begin with there is an all new dashboard. The centre console consists of AC vents, followed by the touchscreen system that we have seen on the Kwid and even the Duster. This is one aspect that could have been avoided. There is climate control, which is the same like the Duster.

The steering wheel has cruise control and audio controls behind it. The instrument cluster is all new and it does look stylish. The design is cool and is unique too. There is digital speedometer and the rev meter is there. The side AC vents are circular. The front row seats are large and comfortable. There is more than sufficient head room and even comfort for the front passengers.  The touch and feel of materials is a lot premium.

The rear seats have decent knee room. The head room is generous at the back. The rear seats split 60:40 and there is an arm rest too. There is rear AC vent too. The boot space is 387 litres and it increases to 1,200 litres.  The rear seat folds flat making it convenient.

The turning radius also at 5.5m is good enough for a SUV in its segment. Renault’s new SUV Captur is longer, wider and premium than the current Duster.
